Word for Today, Fri, 18 May 2001: Touch someone with His love

Posted by: masinick <masinick@...>

Dear friends,

I don't know about you, but when something is important to me, I
think about it over and over. I want to hear it over and over,
and I say it to others over and over.

Any of you who have been on this mailing list for very long know
that I frequently mention "The Great Commandment". Sometimes I
quote it from Matthew 22, other times I quote it from Mark 12,
other times I just talk about it. But it keeps coming back.

I received the attached message from the Word for Today mailing
list (yes, someone else uses that name, too). Apparently, Bob
Gass also feels that it is important to emphasize the
importance of us demonstrating love. You will remember that Joe
Stowell, President of Moody Bible College, also recently preached
an entire series on Matthew 22, and the importance of loving
people, then he followed up with another series about the
Humility of Christ, and how Christ served others.

Could the Holy Spirit be speaking through all these people? I
believe that, most whole heartedly. I also believe His Spirit is
working in me when it keeps exhorting me about this very thing.
So what can I do? Be kind to others, encourage, forgive, help
those in need, let go of grudges, look for ways to serve. To me,
those are examples of ways to show love to one another, to praise
God in what I think and do. I remember one thing, though. The
strength to do each of these things does not come strictly from
my own energies, but from the empowerment of God's Holy Spirit.
Therefore, as I go about doing these things, I must continually praise
God for all that He is and all that He does. Amen.

Brother Brian

Mark 12

30 Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your
soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.'

31 The second is this: `Love your neighbor as yourself.' There is
no commandment greater than these."

John 15

13 Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life
for his friends.

WORD FOR TODAY with Bob Gass - Friday 18th May 2001

Touch someone with His love

"LET US CONSIDER HOW WE MAY SPUR ONE ANOTHER ON TOWARD LOVE AND
GOOD DEEDS."

HEBREWS 10:24

If you want to be truly 'godly,' go out and start a helping
trend! Anybody can love the loveable, but listen to what Jesus
said:

"Love your enemies. Let them bring out the best in you, not the
worst. When someone gives you a hard time, respond with the
energies of prayer for that person. If someone slaps you in the
face, stand there and take it. If someone grabs your shirt,
gift-wrap your best coat and make a present of it. If someone
takes unfair advantage of you, use the occasion to practice the
servant life. No more "tit-for-tat" stuff. Live generously.

"Here is a simple rule of thumb for behaviour. Ask yourself what
you want people to do for you; then grab the initiative and do it
for them. If you love only the loveable, do you expect a pat on
the back? Run-of-the-mill sinners do that. If you help only
those who help you, do you expect a medal? Garden-variety
sinners do that. If you give only for what you hope to get out
of it, do you think that's charity? The stingiest of pawnbrokers
does that. I tell you, love your enemies. Help and give without
expecting a return. You'll never - I promise - regret it" (Lk
6:27 - 35 TM).

To follow Jesus means: to love expecting nothing in return; to
give even though they'll never say thanks; to forgive even though
they won't forgive you in return; to come early, stay late, and
invest everything you've got, even when nobody notices. Paul
refers to this kind of lifestyle as "the high calling" (Phil
3:14). That's because none of us would ever have set such a
standard!
