Word for Today, Fri, 2 Mar 2001: Learning from Jonah

Posted by: masinick <masinick@...>

Dear friends,

Here is a message from Quiet Walk, courtesy of Crosswalk.com, which
reminds me about the nature of God - all knowing, all wise, constantly
aware of what is happening everywhere. That means He knows what each
one of us is doing at this very moment. Knowing this can be either
a comforting thing or a distressing thing, depending on what your
relationship with God is like.

For me, I know God to be just, but full of mercy. I know that I am
in need of His mercy, and that I cannot rely on even my best efforts
to save myself - I need God. Because of that realization and a humble
heart, I believe that God hears and knows my needs, and responds.

Just the same, when I behave like Jonah, it is a reminder that God will
deal with me, as He did with Jonah. Knowing that, I desire to do what
God asks and requires of me. How about you?

Brother Brian

Quiet Walk Jonah 1

OVERVIEW

Jonah is thrown into the sea and swallowed by a great fish
because he disobeyed God.

INSIGHT

You can run but you can't hide from God. Wherever you go, He is
there. It is foolish to think that God can be out- witted,
outsmarted, or tricked in any way. There are times when God lets
us go our way in disobedienceand there are times when He does
not. The reasons for the differences are hidden in His
sovereignty, but we surely must accept that "our arms are too
short to box with God." From Jonah's example and the example of
many others in the Bible, we must learn obedience to God's will.
No matter how hard His will is, disobeying is harder. In the end,
God will have His way. Trust God. He is too wise to make a
mistake and too good to be unkind.

Prayer:
Thank the Lord that He honors us with the privilege of giving to
His work:

O God, You are my God; Early will I seek You; My soul thirsts for
You; My flesh longs for You In a dry and thirsty land Where there
is no water. So I have looked for You in the sanctuary, To see
Your power and Your glory (Psalm 63:1-2).

Pray this confession to the Lord as you seek to keep your life
free from sin and in fellowship with Him:

Bless the Lord, O my soul; And all that is within me, bless His
holy name! Bless the Lord, O my soul, And forget not all His
benefits: Who forgives all your iniquities (Psalm 103:1-3).

Confess any sins that the Holy Spirit brings to your mind. As you
agree with God's will, voice your affirmation of His Word:

I may come to You, I who labor and am heavy laden, and You will
give me rest. I may take Your yoke upon me and learn from You,
for You are gentle and lowly in heart, and I will find rest for
my soul. For Your yoke is easy and Your burden is light (Matthew
11:28-30).

As you make your requests known to the Lord, pray for:

greater wisdom for living,

the needs of your family,

the fruit of the Spirit in your life.

Offer this prayer of worship to God:

May we grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior
Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory both now and forever. Amen
(2Peter 3:18).
