Word for Today, Fri, 31 May 2002: Here's what we can DO!

Posted by: masinick <masinick@...>

Dear friends,

As we approach the end of another work week, let's remember to follow
the advice of scripture: "While we have opportunity, let us do good to
all men, and especially to those who are of the household of faith
(Galatians 6:10)."

In this world, wrong things will happen. I can guarantee that there
will be things that will happen to us, perhaps even today, that aren't
right. There's a good chance, too, that willingly or unknowingly, we
will also do something wrong toward someone else today or some time
soon. Therefore, the message here is both relevant and practical.

People frequently use the phrase, "What Would Jesus Do?" (WWJD) They
carry around WWJD "stuff". Well, here's a WWJD set of practical
suggestions, the kind of things that Jesus really would do.

I'm thinking of the song from the Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir
collection: "Giving My Best":

Now I'm giving my best to You, Lord
ALL that I have I won't withhold
Giving my best to You Lord:
All of my heart and All of my soul!

You are the One who gave Your life for me
You gave your best on Calvary...

So every time I think about the pettiness around me (whether I'm
responsible for it or it is the work of someone else), I am drawn back
to really thinking about Christ, who draws us OUT of that tyranny and
back to the focus on Him - His character, His nature, His deeds, His
love. No wonder we say that it is HE who saves us! Clearly we are
unable to do such things ourselves. But we can learn to turn away
from our natures and embrace the Man of the Cross and take on His
character --- and by His grace, not only will our lives be saved, but
our daily lives will ALSO be transformed, as we renew our minds,
thinking about His ways, and genuinely living by them.

Have a great weekend!

Your Brother in Christ,
Brian

DO IT ANYWAY

While we have opportunity, let us do good to all men, and
especially to those who are of the household of faith (Galatians
6:10).

After I had driven home the point that nobody or nothing can keep
us from being what God wants us to be, one of my students gave me
this nugget of truth from an unknown author.

People are unreasonable, illogical and self-centered.

Love them anyway.

If you do good, people will accuse you of selfish, ulterior
motives.

Do good anyway.

If you are successful, you will win false friends and true
enemies.

Succeed anyway.

The good you do today will be forgotten tomorrow.

Do good anyway.

Honesty and frankness make you vulnerable.

Be honest and frank anyway.

The biggest people with the biggest ideas can be shot down

by the smallest people with the smallest minds.

Think big anyway.

People favor underdogs but follow only top dogs.

Fight for the underdog anyway.

What you spend years building may be destroyed overnight.

Build anyway.

People really need help, but may attack you if you help them.

Help people anyway.

Give the world the best you've got and you'll get kicked in
the teeth.

Give the world the best you've got anyway.

Lord, I purpose today not to listen to my detractors or look to
the left or the right, but to stay on the clear, sure path You
have set before me.
