Word for Today, Mon, 12 Aug 2002: A New Challenge?

Posted by: masinick <masinick@...>

Dear friends,

I receive a regular message from Kevin Corbin, Gleanings From The
Word Ministries International. Kevin's messages always challenge
each of us, whether we claim to have a faith, or whether we're
just thinking about matters of faith.

For those of you who read the 1 Corinthians 7 mailing list, I
mostly write about matters of faith because I firmly believe that
every issue we face, whether it is a work, family, or relational
issue, is addresssed and dealt with in the Word of God. So when
Kevin's messages challenge us, I am personally moved. How about
you? Do the words below challenge you?

Have you had your own private appointment with your Savior today?

Dear Lord,

It is my fervent prayer that I remember You in everything that I
do, and that I include You in my thinking, in my attitudes, and
in my actions. I need You. Please help me: I want others to
know the love that You have and the joy of Your salvation. I
confess that I allow excuses, and fears to impede me from sharing
the hope that I have in You with others. With Your guidance, I
can overcome all of these things, but it's obvious that I cannot
do so alone.

I also continue to pray that You would help me to be a genuine
encouragement to others, and that I may also be encouraged by
others. May we be one in the common hope that we find complete
in Christ. I ask each of these things humbly in Christ's Name.
Amen.

Your Brother in Christ,
Brian

Surrender

This morning's Gleanings From The Word will be a little
interactive, so if you feel embarrassed easily, read it while you
are by yourself.

I watched the newscast at the police ordered the suspect to
surrender. He complied in the universal surrender position of
hands over the head with open palms. We've all seen it.

It got me wondering about the word surrender. I visited my trusty
friend dictionary.com. In part, it has this to say about
surrender:

-To relinquish possession or control of to another because of
demand or -compulsion.

-To give up in favour of another.

-To give up or give back (something that has been granted):
surrender a -contractual right.

-To give up or abandon: surrender all hope.

-To give over or resign (oneself) to something, as to an emotion:
-surrendered himself to grief.

-Law. To restore (an estate, for example), especially to give up
(a -lease) before expiration of the term.

It was pretty much what I thought I would find. To surrender is
to give over to something. It's what we do when we ask Jesus into
our lives.

Here comes the interactive part: Wherever you are sitting, raise
your arms above your head (if you can) and surrender to God. Read
the following prayer out loud while you're doing it.

If you've accepted Christ already read this prayer

Father God:

I know you and have asked you into my life. In the past I've
asked you to be Lord and to forgive and bless me. I confess
father that there are parts of me that I haven't given over to
you. I surrender all those things to you now Father. Forgive me
and make me totally yours. Amen

If you've never believed there was a God who loved you, would
forgive and bless you and accept you no matter what. Wouldn't you
like to? Try this prayer on for size.

God if you are real and you're out there, I want to know. I want
to believe in someone. Make yourself known to me. Help me find
you.

Surrender seems to have negative connotations to many
people. Surrendering yourself to God brings blessings.

If you fully obey the LORD your God and carefully follow all his
commands I give you today, the LORD your God will set you high
above all the nations on earth. All these blessings will come
upon you. You will be blessed in the city and blessed in the
country. The fruit of your womb will be blessed, and the crops of
your land and the young of your livestock--the calves of your
herds and the lambs of your flocks.Your basket and your kneading
trough will be blessed. You will be blessed when you come in and
blessed when you go out. The LORD will grant that the enemies who
rise up against you will be defeated before you. They will come
at you from one direction but flee from you in seven. The LORD
will send a blessing on your barns and on everything you put your
hand to. The LORD your God will bless you in the land he is
giving you. The LORD will establish you as his holy people, as he
promised you on oath, if you keep the commands of the LORD your
God and walk in his ! ways. Then all the peoples on earth will
see that you are called by the name of the LORD, and they will
fear you. The LORD will grant you abundant prosperity--in the
fruit of your womb, the young of your livestock and the crops of
your ground--in the land he swore to your forefathers to give
you. The LORD will open the heavens, the storehouse of his
bounty, to send rain on your land in season and to bless all the
work of your hands. You will lend to many nations but will borrow
from none. The LORD will make you the head, not the tail. If you
pay attention to the commands of the LORD your God that I give
you this day and carefully follow them, you will always be at the
top, never at the bottom. Do not turn aside from any of the
commands I give you today, to the right or to the left, following
other gods and serving them. Deuteronomy 28:1-14 NIV

You will still face struggles in life. There is no growth without
struggle, no joy without pain. But you will be blessed.

Until next time, rejoice in the blessings of surrendering to God.

Be blessed

Hallelu Yah

Kevin

If you haven't made the decision to accept Christ, email me and
I'll share some Bible verses that explain why a personal
relationship with Jesus is so important and a prayer that will
make it possible.

Or simply begin the relationship by saying a prayer along the
lines of:

God:

I have made many mistakes in my life and done things I am not
proud of. I need your love and forgiveness. I believe that you
came into this world and gave your life on a cross to pay for my
sins and that you defeated death and rose again. Please forgive
me, and be the Lord of my life. I give my life to you Lord.

Amen

If you pray this prayer for the first time email me to let me
know so I can rejoice with you.

Did you know that at Gleanings, we have a dedicated team of
prayer warriors and all prayer concerns are kept strictly
confidential? Your comments, your questions and your joys are
shared with the prayer team, to keep me accountable as the head
of the ministry and to encourage them as they see God at work in
your life. As with prayer all these things are kept confidential
within the Gleanings team. To share your prayer concerns and
praise reports email us
