Word for Today, Mon, 12 Feb 2001: The Role of Prayer in Spiritual Warfare

Posted by: masinick <masinick@...>

Dear friends,

Prayer is one of the key items of spiritual warfare. If you have
never heard the term "spiritual warfare" used before, or you are
uncertain of what it means, take the time to read Ephesians 6,
starting at verse 10. You can find it online at
bible.gospelcom.net/cgi-bin/bible?passage=Ephesians+6&version=NIV&showfn=yes&showxref=yes&language=english

or by starting at the Bible Gateway, bible.gospelcom.net
and selecting the Bible version, (translation) you are most
comfortable using.

Let's take some time right now to pray.

Dear Lord,

I come to You as a needy person. I recognize the importance and
value of the shed blood of Jesus Christ. If it were not for His
great sacrifice of love, I would have no basis for even
considering approaching You with my requests. So I am forever
grateful for this gracious gift. I recognize that Jesus
conquered the power of sin in my life. I know that in order to
make that power effective, I must continually surrender my own
will to that of Your Holy Spirit. Please bring understanding to
Your Word, that I may remember it and apply it to everything in
my life today.

I pray for our families, for the jobs of my friends, for our
continued safety and protection from the evil forces that attempt
to detract, distract, and deceive us from experiencing Your
purpose for our lives, to our joy and for Your glory. Please
direct our local, national, and world leaders in their actions,
that they may lead us in ways consistent with our protection and
Your purpose.

Please bring conviction upon us where needed, but continue to
extend Your Grace to anyone who will accept it. Lord, I know
that mercy triumphs over judgement, and I have seen that priciple
in action, but I also see many things around me that concern me
today. I can only rely on Your divine power to accomplish Your
purpose. I know that You are able to accomplish what concerns
You. Grant me a patient spirit to wait for Your response, and
look for it with eager anticipation. Amen.

Brother Brian

OVERPOWERING THE CAPTORS

How can anyone enter the strong man's house and carry off his
property, unless he first binds the strong man? (Matthew 12:29).

A prime target for our authoritative prayer is the "strong man"
mentioned in Matthew 12:29. Jesus was saying that you cannot
rescue people from the bonds of spiritual blindness or demonic
influence unless you first overpower their captors. Satan's
power is already broken, but he will not let go of anything he
thinks he can keep until we exercise the authority delegated to
us by the Lord Jesus Christ.

When we pray we are not trying to persuade God to join us in our
service for Him; prayer is the activity of joining God in His
ministry. By faith we lay hold of the property in Satan's
clutches which rightfully belongs to God, and we hold on until
Satan turns loose. He will hold on to these people until we
demand their release on the basis of our authority in Christ.
Once Satan is bound through prayer, he must let go.

Understanding the spiritual nature of our world should have a
profound effect on our evangelistic strategy. All too often we
proclaim the virtues of Christianity to unbelievers like someone
standing outside a prison compound proclaiming to the inmates the
virtues of the outside world. But unless someone overpowers the
prison guards and opens the gates, how can the prisoners
experience the freedom we're telling them about? We must learn
to bind the strong man before we will be able to rescue his
prisoners.

In the name and authority of the Lord Jesus Christ, I command
Satan to release those loved ones in my family who are blinded to
the truth and whose thoughts are raised up against the knowledge
of God and to return them from enemy territory.
