Word for Today, Mon, 18 Dec 2000: The Source of Joy

Posted by: masinick <masinick@...>

Dear friends,

The Christmas season is now upon us. As we begin the final work
week before the day we celebrate appears, I encourage you to
spend some quiet time, reflecting on all that God has done for
us, both privately, in each of our lives, and as a group. We
have been richly blessed. If any one happens to think otherwise,
I suggest we need some careful self examination.

As for me, I am eternally grateful for each day I have. Though
there are times of tiredness, days of frustration, for me, I see
it like the apostle Paul did, as he wrote to the early churches.
Paul was continually chased and persecuted, once he left the
group of people who were persecuting Christians. Paul became the
most outspoken spokesman for Jesus Christ, and risked his life
every day. He was beaten, imprisoned, left for dead on multiple
occasions, yet his writings record that he was joyful. It was
Paul who wrote those words" "Rejoice in the Lord always, I will
say it again: Rejoice!"

How many of you realize exactly what Paul was up to when he
penned those words? Was he at some Christian retreat center?
Was he at a Christmas party? Was he celebrating an election?
None of those things are true. He was in prison. The prisons of
his day were much uglier than the prisons we know today (though
neither of them are uplifting places).

But Paul had something that some people simply never find: a hope
that endures all things. What was his hope? If anyone is not
sure what his hope was, please write to me. I will then share
with you "The Rest of the Story".

The Intersection of Faith and Life
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Quiet Walk

Genesis 3:1-13

OVERVIEW

Man rebelled against God and became spiritually separated from
Him.

INSIGHT

Man was created in perfect fellowship and harmony with God. Then
he sinned against God in the Garden of Eden, disobeying God's
command not to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and
evil. At that point, man's fellowship with God was broken.

All of the pain, all of the evil, all of the suffering in the
world from that time until today can be traced to that single act
of rebellion.

Because of the cataclysmic results of that act, it commonly is
referred to as "the Fall of man."

Prayer:

Because in Christ we have been reunited in fellowship with God,
praise the Lord: Men shall speak of the might of Your awesome
acts, And I will declare Your greatness. They shall utter the
memory of Your great goodness, And shall sing of Your
righteousness. The Lord is gracious and full of compassion, Slow
to anger and great in mercy. The Lord is good to all, And His
tender mercies are over all His works (Psalm 145:6-9).

Now pray this confession to the Lord as you seek to keep your
life free from sin and in fellowship with Him:

The righteous cry out, and the Lord hears, And delivers them out
of all their troubles. The Lord is near to those who have a
broken heart, And saves such as have a contrite spirit (Psalm
34:17-18).

Confess any sins that the Holy Spirit brings to your mind. As you
agree with God's will, voice your affirmation of His Word:

You have not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love
and of a sound mind (Based on 2 Timothy 1:7).

As you make your requests known to the Lord, pray for:

- greater love for the lost,

- the work of missions in Liberia and Sierra Leone,

- the leadership of your church.

As you end this time of fellowship with God, meditate on this
verse:

Let the beauty of You, O Lord our God, be upon us, And establish
the work of our hands for us; Yes, establish the work of our
hands (Based on Psalm 90:17).
