Word for Today, Mon, 2 Jul 2001: Demonstrating Love

Posted by: masinick <masinick@...>

Dear friends,

This message from Quiet Walk really hits home for me, enough so
that I've been saving it in my mailbox to share with you. I was
particularly touched by the manner in which Jesus wanted his
brash, but sincere disciple, Peter, to demonstrate his love - not
by bowing down to Jesus, but by caring for and loving others.

It is not really a surprise that Jesus would say such a thing,
for earlier, He had responded to one who questioned Him that the
Greatest Commandment is to love God with all of our being, and
the next commandment is "like it" - to love our neighbor as
ourself. How these words resonate with me.

I urge all of you who have a desire for a close relationship with
God to seek Him first, before all other things. Yet do not
neglect being kind to one another, being an encouragement to
others.

The other scriptures contained in this lesson are also quite
appropriate. I pray that this message affects you as it did me.

Your Brother in Christ,
Brian

BIBLE READING

John 21

OVERVIEW
Christ appears to His disciples and challenges Peter to
love Him.

INSIGHT
It is interesting that the test that Jesus uses for
Peter's love for Him is not that Peter serve the Lord but
that he serve his fellow man. If you love Me, "Feed My
lambs" (v. 15).

Throughout the Bible, the way we treat others is used as
a test of our regard for the Lord. If we disregard our
brothers, we disregard Christ's teaching. If we love our
brothers, we demonstrate our love for Christ.

We can use our relationships with others-especially our
brothers and sisters in Christ-as a measure of how we are
relating to the Lord. We cannot say we love God whom we
have not seen, if we do not love our brother whom we have
seen (1 John 4:20). We can love our brothers without
loving God, but we cannot love God without loving our brothers.

PRAYER

* Praise our Lord for the promise that He will make us
fishers of men:

You are worthy, O Lord,
To receive glory and honor and power;
For You created all things,
And by Your will they exist and were
created (Revelation 4:11).

I will praise the Lord according to His
righteousness,
And will sing praise to the name of the
Lord Most High (Psalm 7:17).

* Now pray this confession to the Lord:

Create in me a clean heart, O God,
And renew a steadfast spirit within me.
Do not cast me away from your presence,
And do not take Your Holy Spirit from me.
Restore to me the joy of Your salvation,
And uphold me by Your generous Spirit.
Then I will teach transgressors Your ways,
And sinners shall be converted to You (Psalm 51:10-13).

* As you confess your sins, voice your
affirmation of God's Word:

And this is Your commandment: that we should believe
on the name of Your Son Jesus Christ and love one
another,
as You gave us commandment
(based on 1 John 3:23).

* As you make your requests known to the Lord, pray
for:

* faithfulness in sharing Christ,
* national and world affairs,
* all the innocent lives that are being
damaged by war.

* Close with this prayer of worship to the Lord:

May You, the God of all grace . . . perfect,
establish, strengthen, and settle us. To You be the
glory and the dominion forever and ever. Amen (based
on 1Peter 5:10-11).
