Word for Today, Mon, 3 Dec 2001: Entering a New Season

Posted by: masinick <masinick@...>

Dear friends,

As we begin a new week, we have also entered a new season. No,
we haven't officially started Winter yet. In New Hampshire, in
fact, the weather can't seem to make up its mind. The "jet
stream" keeps moving north or south of our state, varying the
weather from unseasonably mild (OK by me) to typical late fall
weather (I'll take it, but I could easily live on 3 seasons
instead of 4)!

But the season I am really talking about is the season of great
expectation. It is the time of the year that traditional
Christians call "Advent". Though in weather, this is not my
favorite season, in the Spirit, this IS one of my favorites. We
just passed the U.S. time of Thanksgiving. For me, it is a time
to give thanks to God for all that He has done and continues to
do, not only for me, but for all people. Now, I'm beginning a
time of reflection. After giving thanks (which actually begins
the reflections), I now turn to remembering the set of events
surrounding the prophesies in the Bible concerning the birth of a
Savior, and then the fulfillment of the prophesy.

To me, these are among the most significant days. The other
great season, in a spiritual sense, is when I remember the
sacrifice of Christ, His sufferring, death, and resurrection.

Both set of events remind me of both the goodness and greatness
of God. As we enter into this season, I invite you into a time
of reflection. Therefore, today. as I offer two sets of
messages, the usual "Weekly Verses" and the prayer requests from
the Presidential Prayer Team, I invite you to incorporate them
into your personal reflections of who God is and what He has done
for you. In the days to come, I will be sharing some of the
things God has done for me, personally.

Your Brother in Christ,
Brian

MONDAY

Since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us
be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and
awe.

--Hebrews 12:28
New International Version

THOUGHTS ABOUT TODAY'S VERSE...
We are receiving the triumphant and glorious victory of God
in his Kingdom. We will join with the angels and the saints of
old and live with the Father forever in victorious and
never-ending joy. But this Kingdom doesn't begin just when
Jesus returns. This Kingdom has started now in his Church, his
people, those in whom God's will is cherished and obeyed. So
our worship should be filled with awe that the holy God of
Israel is also the lowly God in Jesus who has redeemed us and
made us to be a holy people unto himself. What else can we do
but worship with heartfelt thanksgiving and wonder-struck awe?

MY PRAYER...
Holy and Righteous Father, all things are yours. Thank you
for sharing your blessings, your promises, your hope, and your
victory with us in Jesus. Please help me to live a more
thankful, victorious life before my unbelieving friends and as
an example to my children so they may come to share your
glorious Kingdom and ultimate victory. In Jesus name I pray.
Amen.

TUESDAY

Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and
admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms,
hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God.

--Colossians 3:16
New International Version

THOUGHTS ABOUT TODAY'S VERSE...
We sing when we are happy. We sing when we are heartbroken.
Today we sing out of gratitude. God is not only worthy of all
of our praise, he is worthy of all of our thankfulness. But
the basis of all our songs is Jesus, and the proclamation of
the good news that brings life to us through him. As that
message, that word of Christ fills our hearts, we are tuned to
be thankful children of the Most High.

MY PRAYER...
I am so thankful today, Lord, for all the many blessings you
have poured into my life. Your love, grace, mercy, and
forgiveness give me hope for the future. Your gift of Jesus
gives me life today and promises life tomorrow. The incredible
physical blessings, as well as the blessings of family and
friends, are wonderful. But the greatest of all blessings is
the assurance that I will one day see you face- to-face and
share your glorious presence forever. In Jesus name I pray.
Amen.

~~~~~~~~~
WEDNESDAY
Give thanks to the Lord, call on his name; make known among the
nations what he has done.
--1 Chronicles 16:8
New International Version
THOUGHTS ABOUT TODAY'S VERSE...
Giving thanks is more than being thankful to God, it is
letting others know of his gracious works so they too can come
to know him as Father, Redeemer, and Victorious Lord.
MY PRAYER...
Holy God, Almighty King, bless all those who serve you in
difficult places today. I especially am thankful for all the
missionaries in other cultures sharing the grace of Jesus with
people who need to know you as Abba Father. Empower their
words, protect their lives and families, and bless their
efforts with fruit. Please help me to understand that true
thankfulness involves sharing your grace with others. Through
Jesus I pray. Amen.
~~~~~~~~~

THURSDAY

Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good. His love endures
forever. Give thanks to the God of heaven. His love endures
forever.

--Psalm 136:1 and 26
New International Version

THOUGHTS ABOUT TODAY'S VERSE...
Our thanks arises from the nature of God and his glory and
goodness. The steadfast reason we give thanks is because God
is good and his love is inexhaustible, beyond decay, and never
ending.

MY PRAYER...
O great Lover of my soul, thank you for sending Jesus as the
demonstration of your love. I love you Father. I love you for
who you are and what you have done. I love you for what you
have promised. I love you for the blessings you shower upon
me. I love you for giving me hope. I love you because you
first loved me. I love you because you are worthy of all love.
But I confess that my love is not as strong as yours, so
please, fill me with your love by the power of the Holy Spirit.
Through Jesus I lift my heart to you. Amen.

~~~~~~~~~
FRIDAY
The day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will
disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire,
and the earth and everything in it will be laid bare. Since
everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people
ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives.
--2 Peter 3:10-11
New International Version
THOUGHTS ABOUT TODAY'S VERSE...
Holiness is that forgotten character virtue that is the
Christian's reflection of God, his or her holy and righteous
Father. In a day of cheap grace, when anything goes just as
long as we want to be buddies with Jesus, Peter's words should
shock us into reverence - the commitment in life to set our
lives apart from the evil and sludge that defiles our hearts
and to offer our bodies, hearts, and minds to do his will and
reflect his character.
MY PRAYER...
Holy and Righteous Father, teach me to do your will and
reflect your character while offering your grace. May the
movements of my heart, the thoughts of my mind, and the actions
of my life be pleasing to you and reflect your holiness and
grace. In Jesus name I pray. Amen.
~~~~~~~~~

SATURDAY

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and
the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. The Word
became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his
glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father,
full of grace and truth.

--John 1:1-2 and 14
New International Version

THOUGHTS ABOUT TODAY'S VERSE...
All true ministry is "incarnational" - it involves people to
people contact, human touch, and genuine physical care. While
Heartlight is an Internet ministry, it will never live in
cyberspace. It must be carried into the daily life of
believers who are committed to share the grace of Jesus with
their FRANs (Friends, Relatives, Acquaintances, Neighbors).
Just as God purposely sent Jesus at the right time to the right
place, he did so with us. We are here to bless others, "not
just in word, but in deed and truth!"

MY PRAYER...
Glorious Father, thank you for putting me where I am. I
know I am here to do your work and carry on Jesus' ministry.
Help me seize the opportunities you give me today to bless
others in the name of Jesus. Through him I pray. Amen.

~~~~~~~~~
SUNDAY
In the past God spoke to our forefathers through the prophets
at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he
has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all
things, and through whom he made the universe.
--Hebrews 1:1-2
New International Version
THOUGHTS ABOUT TODAY'S VERSE...
God is a speaking God. He loves us and has chosen to get
his message to us in words. First there were the patriarchs
and great prophets. Then there was the written record in the
Scriptures. But God's greatest message, his most powerful
words, were not really words at all, but a person named Jesus
of Nazareth, who is Christ and Lord of all. For us, his
Church, to be what he wants us to be, we must not just look at
Scripture, we must also look at him. He is the key to
understanding what Scripture means and how it is to be lived.
MY PRAYER...
Holy Father, help me to see Jesus and his work and purpose
more clearly as I open your Book and seek to understand your
will. Fill me with your Spirit, so that I may greet each
decision awakened to the answer to "What would Jesus do?"
Through Jesus, my Lord and Savior I pray. Amen.
PRESIDENTIAL PRAYER REQUESTS FOR THE WEEK OF DECEMBER 2:
This week offers an unprecedented opportunity for our nation to
come together to pray for its leaders and for our future. Under
a joint resolution of Congress, December 4th has been designated
the National Day of Reconciliation. From 7:00 PM-9:00 PM, the
Rotunda of the Capitol Building in Washington, D.C., will be the
focal point of the event, hopefully to be attended by many of our
elected representatives and governmental leaders. We urge each
member of the Presidential Prayer Team to have their own time of
prayer and thanksgiving and to invite others to pray with them
for our nation.
Pray specifically for the President as he conveys America's
sorrow to Israel in the wake of last weekend's horrific suicide
bombings there. Pray for continued wisdom on the part of the
President and military leaders in regard to other regions of the
world that may require military action to root out known
terrorists and destroy terrorist training facilities. Pray for
continued vigilance on the part of all Americans and that we will
never forget those who died at the hands of terrorists on
September 11th.
Give thanks this week for the successes that have been achieved
in Afghanistan. We are particularly thankful for the new
freedoms that will now be enjoyed by all Afghan citizens, the
minimal number of casualties America has suffered in
Afghanistan, and for the safe return of Christian relief workers
Heather Mercer and Dayna Curry (see the quote from Dayna Curry
below).
***PLEASE FORWARD THIS INFORMATION ABOUT THE NATIONAL DAY OF
RECONCILIATION TO ALL OF YOUR FRIENDS. LITTLE IS BEING SAID
ABOUT THIS IMPORTANT EVENT IN THE PRESS****
ADDITIONAL LEADERS TO PRAY FOR THIS WEEK:
Vice President: Richard B. Cheney
Chief of Staff: Andrew Card
Commander of the U.S. military operation in Afghanistan: General
Tommy Franks
Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff: General Richard B. Myers
NEWS FOR MEMBERS ONLY:
-- ACTUAL MEMBERSHIP TO EXCEED 1 MILLION THIS WEEK! We've
determined that each address on our file represents 1.4 persons
in a household or office that have joined membership. That
means that the 700,000 addresses currently on file amounts to 1
million actual members!
-- NEW HONORARY COMMITTEE MEMBERS. We welcome two best selling
authors, Dr. John Trent and Dr. John C. Maxwell, to our Honorary
Committee.
-- DECALS DELAYED?MAILED LAST WEEK. For reasons beyond our
control, membership decals were delayed yet again two weeks ago.
Last week they were mailed to our first 550,000 members. Thank
you for your continued patience. Be watching for the envelope
from The Presidential Prayer Team to arrive this week.
-- YOUR SUPPORT IS NEEDED! Members who graciously provide a
one-time gift of $20 or more will be sent a beautiful silver
commemorative coin engraved by William Hunter, plus 3 additional
membership decals. Due to quicker than expected growth, the
nonprofit organization's operating costs have risen far above the
initial funding by a foundation. That's why added support is now
needed. Please call 1-800-295-1235 (24 hours) or send a
tax-deductible gift to: The Presidential Prayer Team, P.O. Box
2300, Orange, CA 92859.
-- JOIN THE "A-TEAM!" Very soon members will be invited to help
promote growth in membership of The Presidential Prayer Team in
their place of worship. Posters, decals, signup forms, emblem
shirts and other promotional information will be provided.
Please consider becoming an A-Team leader in your association or
house of worship.
-- NEW WEARABLE RESOURCES. Remind yourself and others to pray for
the President with a number of prayer reminder products that
will be available to members, including tee shirts, mugs, hats,
lapel pins, and more. Proceeds from the sale of these resources
will help support this effort.
-- NEW RADIO PSA's AVAILABLE. Radio stations may download the
newly produced radio PSA (:60 and :30) at
http://www.presidentialprayerteam.org/media.asp or call our office for a
CD. This PSA replaces the initial recording, which focused on
September 11th.
-- RADIO PROGRAM BEGINS PRODUCTION. The Presidential Prayer Team
radio program is to begin production this week. The short
program, set to begin airing February 4, will feature the story
of an American hero each day and reveal the religious heritage of
our nation.
PRESIDENTIAL QUOTE:
"Every thinking man, when he thinks, realizes that the teachings
of the Bible are so interwoven and entwined with our whole civic
and social life that it would be literally-I do not mean
figuratively, but literally- impossible for us to figure what
that loss would be if these teachings were removed. We would
lose all the standards by which we now judge both public and
private morals; all the standards towards which we, with more or
less resolution, strive to raise ourselves." --President
Theodore Roosevelt
VIEWPOINT ON PRAYER:
"When we are linked by the power of prayer, we, as it were, hold
each other's hand as we walk side by side along a slippery path;
and thus by the bounteous disposition of charity, it comes about
that the harder each one leans on the other, the more firmly we
are riveted together in brotherly love." --Pope Gregory
THANKSGIVING FOR PRAYER:
"I'll never be able to thank America and the different Christians
around the world who prayed for us, literally around the clock.
I've realized that we really would not be standing here if people
hadn't prayed for us. It truly was a miracle and I thank the
Lord Jesus Christ for getting us out and answering all those
prayers and for taking such wonderful care of us while we were
there." --Dayna Curry, speaking of her release from the Taliban,
at the White House reception held in honor of her and fellow
worker Heather Mercer.
INSPIRATIONAL VERSE OF THE WEEK:
"Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and
unsearchable things you do not know." --The Bible, Jeremiah
33:3 (NIV)
PRESIDENTIAL PRAYER OF THE WEEK:
"Direct my thought, words and work, wash away my sins in the
immaculate Blood of the Lamb, and purge my heart by Thy Holy
Spirit. Daily frame me more and more into the likeness of Thy
Son Jesus Christ." --President George Washington
