Word for Today, Mon, 31 Jul 2000: Affecting the Way We Think

Dear friends,

I am a big believer in the idea that what we think about has a
great deal of influence on the way we act. This is one area in
which modern psychology actually agrees with scripture (imagine
that)! Scripture tells us things like: "Do not let this Book of
the Law depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so
that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you
will be prosperous and successful" (Joshua 1:8), "But seek first
his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be
given to you as well" (Matthew 6:33), and

4 "Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! 5
Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. 6 Do
not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and
petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And
the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard
your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. 8 Finally, brothers,
whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever
is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable--if anything
is excellent or praiseworthy--think about such things. 9
Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen
in me--put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with
you" (Philippians 4:4-9).

My friends, when I have followed these principles, even the
difficult times of life have been manageable. It has been those
times in which I have forgotten these principles, or had not
learned how to apply them in practical ways, that I have gotten
myself into trouble.

The Bible really is a practical book. It is not filled with
rules, just for rule's sake. It is a prescription for wholesome,
healthy living. The Bible also has many uplifting passages, such
as the Philippians passage I just shared with you, which happens
to be one of my favorites. I hope that you, too, will find
scriptures that become your favorite, and influence the way that
you think and act.
