PRESIDENTIAL PRAYER REQUESTS FOR SEPTEMBER 6, 2002
Pray for all persons who were close to the traumatic events of last September
11--for the family members who lost loved ones, for the rescue workers who
experienced untold horror and tragedy, and for those whose memories are forever
seared by the unbelievable images that were etched in their minds that morning
one year ago.

Pray also for our nation, that we will continue to seek God through prayer and
service to others long after the observances of September 11 have passed. Pray
that millions of Americans of all ages and every walk of life will answer the
President's call to observe a "September of Service" by making a firm
commitment to do good for others in a manner that will bring the biblical value
of servanthood into the fabric of our nation.

Pray also for the President as on September 11 he attends an early morning
prayer service and then re-visits each of the sites of last year's tragedies.
He will close the day with a solemn address to the nation. Pray that he will be
a source of encouragement and comfort to many. The following day he will again
address the United Nations concerning Iraq. Please pray for that meeting.

On Monday, September 9, the President will meet with Canadian Prime Minister
Jean Chrtien in Detroit. The men will discuss issues of border cooperation as
well as issues surrounding the threat of terror from Iraq.

As several million Americans observe the Jewish New Year, Rosh Hashana at
sundown on September 6, pray with them for a true spiritual renewal in the New
Year, as well as a rededication to serving God in every way.

Pray also for those who will rise to thwart the latest attack on our nation's
godly heritage, as the man who fought to have "Under God" removed from the
Pledge of Allegiance is now calling for the removal of chaplains from the
Congress.

ADDITIONAL LEADERS TO PRAY FOR THIS WEEK
Secretary of State--Colin Powell
Secretary of Defense--Donald Rumsfeld
Deputy Secretary of Defense--Paul Wolfowitz
Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff--General Richard B. Myers
Commander of the U.S. military operation in Afghanistan--General Tommy Franks

WORDS FROM THE PRESIDENT ON THE NATIONAL OBSERVANCE OF SEPTEMBER 11
"As we remember the tragic events of September 11, 2001, and the thousands of
innocent lives lost on that day, we recall as well the outpouring of compassion
and faith that swept our Nation in the face of the evil done that day. In
designating September 6-8 as National Days of Prayer and Remembrance, I ask all
Americans to join together in cities, communities, neighborhoods, and places of
worship to honor those who were lost, to pray for those who grieve, and to give
thanks for God's enduring blessings on our land. And let us, through prayer,
seek the wisdom, patience, and strength to bring those responsible for the
attacks to justice and to press for a world at peace.

In the aftermath of the attacks, the words of the Psalms brought comfort to
many. We trust God always to be our refuge and our strength, an ever-present
help in time of trouble. Believing that One greater than ourselves watches over
our lives and over this Nation, we continue to place our trust in Him.

As we confront the challenges before us, I ask you to join me during these Days
of Prayer and Remembrance in praying for God's continued protection and for the
strength to overcome great evil with even greater good."
--President George W. Bush, from the Presidential Proclamation for National
Days of Prayers and Remembrance to be held September 6-8, 2002

POEM FOR PRAYER AND REMEMBRANCE
"Call to Remember and to Prayer"

A year ago terror showed up unannounced.
It didn't call ahead.
And because it didn't,
when we opened the door to see who was there we discovered three thousand were
dead.
Instead of business as usual, Wall Street closed.
A street without walls took stock in what really matters.
Precious metals lacked their normal luster when compared to precious lives.
The world traded nave security for open-ended war. When the Big Apple was
shaken to the core by jet-size bullets, the entire nation quaked. Caught off
guard, Americans didn't fake courage. Patriotic hearts beat as one but raced in
fear. Seizing whatever faith we had, we fell to our knees.
We could tell that pledging allegiance to a flag could not take the place of
calling out to God.
It was a day that proved that those who live in the land of the free and the
home of the brave know how to behave when push comes to shove and terror comes
to stay.
We pray. But only then?
The 11th of September calls us to remember (and understand) that a nation can
only be indivisible under God.
We can't just fly a flag. We have to fold our hands.
Suffice it to say, we've been called to pray.
Not just when terror rings the bell. But every single day.
-- Rev. Greg Asimakoupoulos

OUR NATION'S GODLY HERITAGE
In the aftermath of last September's tragedy, our nation's leaders gathered on
September 14 to worship God and to seek His guidance in the face of unspeakable
tragedy. It was fitting that the service was held in the National Cathedral,
the magnificent structure that was first conceived of in 1771 by city designer
Pierre L'Enfant.

L'Enfant believed that Washington needed a great cathedral rivaling those of
Europe in order to serve our national religious needs. He felt the church
should not be assigned to one particular group or denomination, but should be
open to all faiths equally. It was not until 1893 that Congress allocated funds
for the building of the National Cathedral, and it was begun in 1907. The
cathedral was finally completed in 1990.

The National Cathedral was the site for the emotional service of prayer and
remembrance held shortly after the 9/11 attacks. Leaders and dignitaries
representing our government, military and the Church filled the huge sanctuary
for this nationally televised event--a service that expressed our national
shock mingled with a corporate willingness to turn to God for solace, strength
and hope.

Addressing the assembly, Rev. Billy Graham said, "Today, we especially come
together in this service to confess our need of God. We've always needed God
from the very beginning of this nation, but today we need Him especially."

President Bush's comments were the beginning of a national call to prayer.
"There are prayers that help us last through the day, or endure the night.
There are prayers of friends and strangers, that give us strength for the
journey. And there are prayers that yield our will to a will greater than our
own. This world He created is of moral design. Grief and tragedy and hatred are
only for a time. Goodness, remembrance, and love have no end. And the Lord of
life holds all who die, and all who mourn."

PRESIDENTIAL QUOTE FOR THE WEEK
"Avoid all disrespect to or contempt of the religion of the country and its
ceremonies. Prudence, policy, and a true Christian spirit will lead us to look
with compassion upon their errors without insulting them. While we are
contending for our own liberty, we should be very cautious of violating the
rights of conscience in others, ever considering that God alone is the judge of
the hearts of men, and to him only in this case they are answerable."
--George Washington

INSPIRATIONAL REFERENCE FOR THE WEEK
"Give thanks to the Lord, call on His name, make known among the nations what
He has done. Sing to Him, sing praise to Him; tell of all His wonderful acts.
Glory in His holy name; let the hearts of those who seek the Lord rejoice. Look
to the Lord and His strength; seek His face always."
--The Bible, Psalm 105:1-4, (NIV)

WORDS ON 9-11 FROM THE HONORARY COMMITTEE
"Christians ought not to be smothered in fear. There is a spiritual readiness,
where we return to having the peace of God stand guard over our hearts and
minds. What an incredible witness it is to a lost and fearful society when the
Christian acts like a child of God, living under the loving sovereignty of the
Heavenly Father. The Christian needs to walk in peace, so no matter what
happens they will be able to bear witness to a watching world."
--Henry Blackaby, Author and President, Henry Blackaby Ministries

PRAYER QUOTES FOR THE WEEK
"A satisfying prayer life elevates and purifies every act of body and mind and
integrates the entire personality into a single spiritual unit. In the long
pull we pray only as well as we live."
--A. W. Tozer
