Word for Today, Sat, 22 Sep 2001: Discipline is Preparation - For Him

Posted by: masinick <masinick@...>

Dear friends,

I decided to send this weekend edition because the Quiet Walk
Devotional for Saturday covers some things that I think are
important for us to consider.

First, in case some of you are not familiar with the terminology,
"The Lord's Supper" refers to an important thing that Christians
do in remembrance of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. If you
read the suggested Bible reading (which you can look up at
bible.gospelcom.net if you would like to read it online:
bible.gospelcom.net/cgi-bin/bible?passage=1+Corinthians+11&version=NIV&showfn=yes&showxref=yes&language=english).

Often, pastors will read 1 Corinthians 11:23-26 as a preparation
for "The Lord's Supper", which some refer to as "Holy Communion".
It is something that Jesus Christ did Himself on the night known
as Maundy Thursday, which occurred during the Jewish Passover
Celebration, and was the night in which Jesus Christ was
betrayed, as the passage explains.

The passage also goes on to explain why God disciplines those He
loves: to correct them, disciplining them, so that they will not
be condemned with the world.

Think about children for a moment. The vast majority of us have
children, but even those who do not have children have BEEN
children. We realize that disciplining and being disciplined is
never fun, but unless we prefer facing consequences later, we
realize that it is a good thing to undergo discipline. In fact,
some of us who educate ourselves, once we are mature, place
OURSELVES under discipline, so that we can gain further maturity,
in order to become the very best at what we do. That's what God
wants for us - to have the best and become the best, and to avoid
the things that can cause harm.

I am forever grateful for every way of the Lord, including His
discipline. Were it not for Grace, I can tell you where I'd be -
completely lost, forever running, but losing my way. How I
praise my God for His indescribable gift --- and that INCLUDES
His discipline.

Your Brother in Christ,
Brian

BIBLE READING

1 Corinthians 11:17-34

OVERVIEW
Paul rebukes disorder at the Lord's Supper.

INSIGHT
Just as an earthly parent loves his children too much to
allow them to plow through life without discipline, so
our heavenly Father loves us too much to allow us to go
through life without discipline. In Hebrews 12:6 we read,
"whom the Lord loves He chastens."

If you persist in sinning willfullywithout regard for
the Lord's will in your lifeHe will chasten you. Sin
harms you and God does not want to see you harmed, so He
chastens you. He does this not out of vindictiveness, but
out of a desire to influence you to stop sinning.

First Corinthians 11:31 says, "If we would judge
ourselves (and stop living in willful sin), we would not
be judged (that is, chastened by the Lord for that sin)."

It makes sense to stop, doesn't it?

PRAYER

* Praise the Lord that He disciplines us to keep us on
the straight and narrow way:

Not unto us, O Lord, not unto us,
But to Your name give glory,
Because of Your mercy,
Because of Your truth...
We who fear You, O Lord, trust in You;
You are our help and our shield...
We will bless the Lord
From this time forth and forevermore.
Praise the Lord!
(based on Psalm 115:1,11,18).

* Now pray this confession to the Lord to keep your
life free from sin and in fellowship with Him:

Turn Yourself to me, and have mercy on me,
For I am desolate and afflicted.
The troubles of my heart have enlarged;
Bring me out of my distresses!
Look on my affliction and my pain,
And forgive all my sins (Psalm 25:16-18).

* Confess any sins that the Holy Spirit brings to your
mind. Now voice your affirmation of His Word:

"Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden,
and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and
learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart,
and you will find rest for your souls" (Matthew
11:28-29).

* As you make your requests known to the Lord, pray
for:

faithfulness with your finances,
revival of Christians in America,
your friends.

* Offer this prayer of worship to God:

Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly
above all that we ask or think,
... to Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus
to all generations, forever and ever. Amen (Ephesians
3:20-21).
