Word for Today SPECIAL on Children

Posted by: masinick <masinick@...>

Dear friends,

Children can be a challenge to raise, and they can take up a lot
of their parent's time. But when is the last time you thought
about the statement: "Children are a treasure from the Lord"?
There is much to indicate that this is true. I did a search on
bible.gospelcom.net, using the word "children" and I came
up with 21 printed pages of links to bible verses, and it stopped
on me, hitting the maximum number of searches after reaching
Matthew 18. When I restricted the search to the New Testament,
the search completed, but still had an extensive list.

Read what Psalm 127 has to say about children:

Psalm 127 Psalm 127 A song of ascents. Of Solomon.

1 Unless the LORD builds the house, its builders labor in vain.
Unless the LORD watches over the city, the watchmen stand guard
in vain.

2 In vain you rise early and stay up late, toiling for food to
eat-- for he grants sleep to those he loves.

3 Sons are a heritage from the LORD, children a reward from him.

4 Like arrows in the hands of a warrior are sons born in one's
youth.

5 Blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them. They will not
be put to shame when they contend with their enemies in the gate.

Children are important. Why is it, then, that many of us do not
pay much attention to our children? Oh, we buy them stuff and we
occasionally do special things. But many of us get annoyed when
our children want our time.

Now, I know from personal experience that children place high
demands on our time. They want our attention. I also know that
there are times when I feel too tired or preoccupied to give my
children the time they seek. But this is really important.

Attached is a message about a boy who actually saved up $20 to
"buy" his father's time. I pray that our children do not have to
go to this extreme to "buy" our attention!

Dear Lord,

You have given us the special gift of children. To be sure, they
are a big responsibility, but they are perhaps the single
greatest responsibility that we, as parents, can have. For those
of us who have children, please give us the resources and energy
to love and give attention to our children. For those of us who
do not have children, give us the wisdom to encourage those who
DO have children, and give us the courage and kindness to help
those who do have children. Forgive us when we fail to give our
children the attention they deserve. They miss us, but I know
they are also extremely tolerant and forgiving. But help us,
lest we miss out and our children lose their innocence and hope.
Amen.

Thought: (Fatherhood) How much Daddy?

A man came home from work late again, tired and irritated, to
find his 5-year-old son waiting for him at the door. Daddy, may
I ask you a question?

Yeah, sure. What is it? replied the man.

Daddy, how much money do you make an hour?

That's none of your business! What makes you ask such a thing?
the man said angrily.

I just wanted to know. Please tell me, how much do you make an
hour? pleaded the little boy.

If you must know, I make $20 an hour.

The little boy looked up at his father and he said, Daddy, may I
borrow $9 please?

The father was furious. If the only reason you wanted to know
how much money I make is just so you can borrow some to buy a
silly toy or some other nonsense, then you march yourself
straight to your room and go to bed. Think about why you're
being so selfish. I work long, hard hours everyday and don't
have time for such childish games.

The little boy quietly went to his room and shut the door.

The man sat down and started to get even madder about the little
boy's questioning. How dare he ask such questions only to get
some money?

After an hour or so, the man calmed down. He started to think
he might have been a little hard on his son. Maybe there was
something he really needed to buy with that $9 and he didn't ask
for money very often.

The man went to the little boy's room and opened the door. Are
you asleep son? he asked.

No daddy, I'm awake, replied the boy.

I've been thinking, maybe I was too hard on you earlier, said
the man. It's been a long day and I took my aggravations out on
you. Here's that $9 you asked for.

The little boy sat straight up, beaming. Oh, thank you daddy!
he yelled. Then, reaching under his pillow, he pulled out some
more crumpled up bills.

The man, seeing that the boy already had money, started to get
angry again.

The little boy slowly counted out his money, then looked up at
the man.

Why did you want more money if you already had some? the father
grumbled.

Because I didn't have enough, but now I do, the little boy
replied. Daddy, I have $20 now. Can I buy an hour of your time?

Share this story with someone you like, but even better, share
$20 worth of time with someone you love.....
