Word for Today, SPECIAL WEEKEND PRAYER EDITION

Dear friends,

I have often emphasized the importance of prayer in our lives. I
believe that prayer is an effective conduit between ourselves and
God. It is the means we have of communicating with God. Today
has been mentioned as a day of prayer for our nation and its
leadership. I'd like you to take note of the fact that these
prayers are not an endorsement of anyone, they are simply a
response to the scriptural mandate to pray for our leaders and
those in authority.

It is the government who has been given the authority by God to
bear "the sword" - protecting the people and punishing those who
do not abide by its principles. It is not an easy job. Mr. Bush
and his cabinet came into office by the narrowest of margins and
some even question his election. Nevertheless, we are
represented by the people who are now in office.

I am grateful that our current president appreciates and asks for
prayer. Here is a man that realizes how much he needs prayer. I
can relate to that. I'd like to think I have things in hand -
under control, but I quickly realize that this is often NOT the
case. Time and time again, I find myself in need, and I realize,
no matter what I think, say, or do, that my life belongs to God,
and I desperately need Him as my source of all things. So if my
president asks for the same thing, whether he's right or wrong
about anything, I deeply respect the need for prayer.

With that as a preface, I urge you to read the prayer request for
our leaders this week. Seek God first for all things. Continue
reading His Word. Ask for wisdom for our leaders, and pray for
God's divine Hand to accomplish His purposes among us.

PRESIDENTIAL PRAYER REQUESTS FOR THE WEEK OF JANUARY 6, 2002:

JOIN WITH OTHERS ON SUNDAY, JANUARY 6 FOR A DAY OF PRAYER AND
SOLIDARITY ORGANIZED BY PROMISE KEEPERS.

Pray for the President as he prepares for an important State of
the Union address later this month. Pray with the President that
our nation will continue to look forward to 2002 with
determination and a resolve to get back to normal following the
September 11th attacks, while remaining on alert regarding
terrorism. Pray for our soldiers serving overseas and every
decision made by military leadership that could put them in
harm's way. Pray that we will remain united as a nation,
looking to God for peace and with confidence for our cause of
freedom.

And let's pray for others this week...specifically for the new
leader of Afghanistan, Mr. Hamid Karzai, and the members of the
team who form the interim government. For the first time in
decades, more than 26 million people will have an opportunity to
experience religious freedom and representational government.
Pray that God's peace will come to that nation, and that God
will rule Mr. Karzai's decisions and alliances.
