Word for Today, Thu Jun 29 2006, In Season, Out of Season
Dear friends,

This message sounds a lot like something my pastor would say. I have
a great deal of regard for my pastor, and I have a lot of respect for
Oswald Chambers as well.

The apostle Paul teaches Timothy to get the right attitude. He had
just finished telling him about the value of scripture, and how
valuable it is in the things of God. Then Paul shared this note, that
he should be always ready, whether in season or out of season.

What about you? Are you ready to share your faith at any time? Do
you know for certain that you have a home reserved for you in heaven?
You can know for certain by reading God's Word and believing it.
Titus 1:2 says that God cannot lie. Therefore, if you accept the
Bible as God's Word of truth and it says that God cannot lie, then it
is so.

Moreover, God is good. No natter how we see things, whether we get
"our way" or not, God is good! I had to cling to this truth many
times over the past four years, when I was concerned about losing all
that I had ever worked for, because I was badly underemployed in an
expensive part of the country (New Hampshire). God made sure we had
food every day. God made sure we had a place to live. Was it tight?
Oh yes. Did I wonder where things would end? All the time. What is
really good is that, at the end of the day, I trusted God, whether we
got "our answer" or not. In His time, God provided.

God cares for us and loves us enough that He gave us free choice, but
that free choice led to us turning away from God. By His love, He
sent us His One and Only Son, Jesus Christ, as a love offering for
us. Jesus came to seek and save that which is lost - you and me, find
us, and offer to save us. I accept His offer, and I turn away from
myself. And you?

Yours in Christ,
Brian

INSTANT IN SEASON

Be instant in season, out of season.

2 Timothy 4:2

Many of us suffer from the morbid tendency to be instant "out of
season." The season does not refer to time, but to us - 'Be instant
in season, out of season," whether we feel like it or not. If we do
only what we feel inclined to do, some of us would do nothing for
ever and ever. There are unemployables in the spiritual domain,
spiritually decrepit people, who refuse to do anything unless they
are supernaturally inspired. The proof that we are rightly related to
God is that we do our best whether we feel inspired or not.

One of the great snares of the Christian worker is to make a fetish
of his rare moments. When the Spirit of God gives you a time of
inspiration and insight, you say - "Now I will always be like this
for God." No, you will not, God will take care you are not. Those
times are the gift of God entirely. You cannot give them to yourself
when you choose. If you say you will only be at your best, you become
an intolerable drag on God; you will never do anything unless God
keeps you consciously inspired. If you make a god of your best
moments, you will find that God will fade out of your life and never
come back until you do the duty that lies nearest, and have learned
not to make a fetish of your rare moments.
