Word for Today, Tue, 05 Jul 2005: Weekly Verses
Dear friends,

I often send you Phil Ware's collection of scripture verses,
thoughts, and prayers, a compilation of his daily verses. These
verses can be useful things to consider throughout the week.
Perhaps you can post a verse a day somewhere nearby so that you
can think about it throughout the day. Perhaps you can study
these passages, one at a time.

Perhaps instead you can develop your own pattern of study that
brings you back to the Bible each and every day. There is an
online location called "Back to the Bible", in fact. You can
find it on the Web at http://www.backtothebible.org/.

Do you like to LISTEN to the Bible at tiems instead of reading
it? You can listen while you are online or you can download MP3
files containing portions of the Bible (or the entire Bible) at
heargoodnews.org/Bible/index.html

There! HearGoodNews.org has the Bible, both in spoken and in
written form. bible.gospelcom.net/ has various
translations and ways to search the Bible, as does
bible.crosswalk.com/, ebible.org/bible/web/,
http://www.blueletterbible.org/, and countless others.

We have bookstores, we have online studies, we have people giving
away Bibles. In short, we have much more than we need. No, we
have less than we need. What we really need is a hunger and
thirsting for righteousness. We cannot find righteousness in
ourselves. We have to find righteousness elsewhere.

The reason we need to read our Bibles is because we need to learn
what God says about our condition. We are deeply loved by God.
However, left untouched, we are in a precarious position because
we are separated from God.

What separates us from God? Our choices, our sin. What brings
us back to God? Righteousness, being made whole. Can any of you
do that on your own? I cannot. I need a Savior, one who can
accomplish what I cannot do.

Fortunately He has already done it for me. His Name is Jesus
Christ. He came to seek and save the lost. His very nature is
etched into the Bible. From cover to cover, the book we call the
Holy Bible writes about creation, the fall of man, and how, from
the beginning, God had a plan to redeem His creation.

Don't believe me, though. Read it for yourself. First, read the
New Testament of the Bible, then read the Old Testament, from the
"lens" of the new. You will realize that Jesus Christ is the
complete fulfillment of every promise that God made to His
people.

Yours in Christ,
Brian

Monday, July 4
I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God
for the salvation of everyone who believes.

--Romans 1:16
New International Version

THOUGHTS ABOUT TODAY'S VERSE...
For the rich and poor, young and hold, weak or strong,
skinny or fat, there is still just one message and one name and
one story that makes the eternal difference -- it is the
Gospel, the story of Jesus Christ.

MY PRAYER...
Great Redeemer, make me more bold to proclaim the Gospel
today. Give me eyes to see those who are waiting to be told.
Fill me up with your Spirit so that I will not be ashamed, and
help me gladly proclaim the story of Jesus so others may know
your grace. Through Jesus I pray. Amen.

Tuesday, July 5

[The Lord says,] "Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be
dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help
you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand."
--Isaiah 41:10
New International Version

THOUGHTS ABOUT TODAY'S VERSE...
Fear saps our will power and leaves us feeling depleted and
hopeless. Yet very few of us have ever experienced a defeat so
complete and bitter as the one God's people faced when Isaiah
shared this message of hope. The preservation of Israel to the
time of Jesus, the resurrection of Jesus from the dead, the
triumph of the Church through centuries of persecution and
opposition are powerful reminders that underneath us are the
everlasting arms of a mighty and loving God.

MY PRAYER...
Almighty and Eternal Father, it is such sweet comfort to
know that you are always there. Thank you! In Jesus' name.
Amen.

Wednesday, July 6

If we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have
fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son,
purifies us from all sin.

--1 John 1:7
New International Version

THOUGHTS ABOUT TODAY'S VERSE...
As we seek to please God and trust his grace, more grace is
supplied. While Jesus' death was "once for all," its cleansing
power goes on and on as long as our hearts are tuned to his
grace.

MY PRAYER...
Loving Father, thank you for the gift of Jesus and the
cleansing his death brings me. Help me today to live a more
dedicated life. Thank you for the assurance that as I seek
your will and live your life you are also forgiving me of my
sins and cleansing me and making me new. Through Jesus I offer
this thanks. Amen.

Thursday, July 7

If we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have
fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son,
purifies us from all sin.

--1 John 1:7
New International Version

THOUGHTS ABOUT TODAY'S VERSE...

grace.

MY PRAYER...

Friday, July 8

I have chosen the way of truth; I have set my heart on your
laws.
--Psalm 119:30
New International Version

THOUGHTS ABOUT TODAY'S VERSE...
Jesus reminded us to "pick up your cross daily and follow"
him. The way of truth is a daily choice. To not choose God's
way, to not intentionally seek to put him at the center of our
life and as the top priority in all of our decisions, is to
slip a little bit further away from the life he calls us to
lead. Lack of a decision is a decision to not follow.

MY PRAYER...
Heavenly Father, I choose to follow you and your truth
today. Open my eyes so I may see your truth and open my heart
that I may live it. I decide today, again, to follow, you with
all my heart, soul, mind, and strength. In Jesus' name I pray.
Amen.

Saturday, July 9

The Son is the radiance of God's glory and the exact
representation of his being, sustaining all things by his
powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he
sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven.
--Hebrews 1:3
New International Version

THOUGHTS ABOUT TODAY'S VERSE...
Jesus was God with us. No imitation, knock off, or clone.
He was God with us. To this day, he sustains creation with his
word -- so much for "Mother Nature." But now "God with us" has
paid for our sins and is not just God with us, but God for us
at the Father's side.

MY PRAYER...
Precious Lord, as you have so many times in the past, you
take these humble human words and bring them to the Father as
my friend and brother. Thank you for your sacrifice, which
saved me. Thank you for your sustaining presence in our
universe. Thank you for your daily intercession. Thank you
for being God for me at the Father's side. To the glorious,
majestic, and holy God, who sent Jesus as Savior, be glory,
honor, and adoration forever and ever. Amen.

Sunday, July 10

At just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ
died for the ungodly. Very rarely will anyone die for a
righteous man, though for a good man someone might possibly
dare to die. But God demonstrates his own love for us in this:
While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
--Romans 5:6-8
New International Version

THOUGHTS ABOUT TODAY'S VERSE...
Jesus died for us,but not because he had some high hopes for
who we are or what we would be. No, he died for us because he
knew exactly who we are and what we would be without him. But
praise be to God, we are now God's righteousness because he
took our sin and gave us God's grace (2 Corinthians 5:17-21).

MY PRAYER...
Holy God, thank you for Jesus, my Savior. No words are
adequate to express my love and devotion to you for such an
incredible gift! Through him I give and live my thanks to you.
Amen.
