Word for Today, Tue, 14 Aug 2001: A Marriage Illustration in the Word

Posted by: masinick <masinick@...>

Dear friends,

Quiet Walk, which originates from the organization "Walk Thru the
Bible", and is made available on the Internet, courtesy of
crosswalk.com, is a devotional series that uses scripture as a
basis for guiding our Bible reading and confessional prayers.
Walk Thru the Bible has some good resources on their own Web
site, so if any of you enjoy visiting Christian Web sites, you
might try out both Crosswalk.com and http://www.walkthru.org. Crosswalk
and Gospelcom are the prominent resources that I have used for
almost six years as online Christian resources, and both of them
have always supplied consistently useful materials. I even read
my Bible online at least as often as I do at my bedside table.

This message today comes from Quiet Walk. The message uses the
apostle Paul's letter to the church in Rome to illustrate our
relationship with Jesus Christ. Paul uses marriage as an
illustration, something he does in Romans, 1 Corinthians, and
Ephesians, just to name a few places where a marriage
illustration is used.

Please pray for your friends today and for one another.

Your Brother in Christ,
Brian

BIBLE READING

Romans 7:1-6

OVERVIEW
A person is bound by the law only as long as the person
lives.

INSIGHT
Paul uses marriage to picture our bondage to sin. As long
as a person's spouse is alive, he is bound to his spouse
in marriage. But if the spouse dies, that bond is severed
and the surviving spouse is free to remarry.

In the same way we were wed to sin, but in Christ we died
to sin. Therefore, we are now free to be married to
righteousness. Sin and death no longer have any hold on
us in eternity; we are freed from both.

We are married to Christ through whom we have the gift of
eternal life.

PRAYER

* As you consider the Lord's intent behind the pain
you may be experiencing, praise Him that He guides
your growth:

Give to the Lord, O families of the peoples,
Give to the Lord glory and strength.
Give to the Lord the glory due His name;
Bring an offering, and come before Him.
Oh, worship the Lord in the beauty of
holiness! (1 Chronicles 16:28-29).

* Pause for a moment of quiet reflection. Now pray
this confession to the Lord to keep your life free
from sin and in fellowship with Him:

I will praise the Lord according to His
righteousness,
And will sing praise to the name of the Lord
Most High (Psalm 7:17).

You, even You, are He who blots out my
transgressions for Your own sake;
And you will not remember my sins
(based on Isaiah 43:25).

* Confess any sins that the Holy Spirit brings to your
remembrance. As you agree with God's will, voice your
affirmation of His Word:

But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that
while we were still sinners, Christ died for us (Romans
5:8).

* As you make your requests known to the Lord, pray
for:

greater compassion for others,
wisdom in decision-making,
the needs of your friends,
today's activities.

* Close this prayer time by expressing your deep
commitment to God through the words of this psalm:

Let the beauty of the Lord our God be upon us,
And establish the work of our hands for us;
Yes, establish the work of our hands
(Psalm 90:17).
