Word for Today, Tue, 18 May 2004: Prayer in the Bible

Posted by: masinick <masinick@...>

Dear friends,

Scripture has a lot to say about prayer. I have extracted many verses, but
these only cover a few of the New Testament books between Hebrews and the three
letters from John. The apostle Paul wrote a great deal about prayer, too.
Jesus Christ Himself taught His disciples to pray.

It's a good idea to use the Bible to provoke thought and direct our prayers. I
encourage you to study on your own and learn much more about the people of the
Bible (Old and New Testaments), how prayer affected their lives, and how God
uses prayer and the Bible itself to communicate with us.

Yours in Christ,
Brian

Hebrews 5:7
During the days of Jesus' life on earth, he offered up prayers and petitions
with loud cries and tears to the one who could save him from death, and he was
heard because of his reverent submission.

Hebrews 13:18
Pray for us. We are sure that we have a clear conscience and desire to live
honorably in every way.

Hebrews 13:19
I particularly urge you to pray so that I may be restored to you soon.

James 5:13
Is any one of you in trouble? He should pray. Is anyone happy? Let him sing
songs of praise.

James 5:14
Is any one of you sick? He should call the elders of the church to pray over
him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord.

James 5:15
And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will
raise him up. If he has sinned, he will be forgiven.

James 5:16
Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you
may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective.

James 5:17
Elijah was a man just like us. He prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and
it did not rain on the land for three and a half years.

James 5:18
Again he prayed, and the heavens gave rain, and the earth produced its crops.

1 Peter 3:7
Husbands, in the same way be considerate as you live with your wives, and treat
them with respect as the weaker partner and as heirs with you of the gracious
gift of life, so that nothing will hinder your prayers.

1 Peter 3:12
For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous and his ears are attentive to
their prayer, but the face of the Lord is against those who do evil."[ 3:12
Psalm 34:1216]

1 Peter 4:7
The end of all things is near. Therefore be clear minded and selfcontrolled so
that you can pray.

1 John 5:16
If anyone sees his brother commit a sin that does not lead to death, he should
pray and God will give him life. I refer to those whose sin does not lead to
death. There is a sin that leads to death. I am not saying that he should pray
about that.

3 John 1:2
Dear friend, I pray that you may enjoy good health and that all may go well
with you, even as your soul is getting along well.
