Word for Today, Wed, 06 Jun 2001: Understanding True Worship

Posted by: masinick <masinick@...>

Dear friends,

Prayer is one topic I think a lot about, when it comes to
spiritual matters. But worship is another of those things I
think about a lot, too. The two are closely related. Both have
to do with our relationship with God. Prayer is our means of
communicating with God. It is like talking, (or thinking without
speaking, but directed to someone - God, and also awaiting a
response.

Worship, on the other hand, comes from "worth". God is worth
thinking about, praising, and giving our attention. We worship
God through song, affirmation, prayer, gathering together, and
also by the attitudes we display.

Quiet Walk has a devotional today about worship. Bob Kauflin has
a weekly series about Worship. Depending on what I believe God
wants me to write about, I may be sharing more about worship over
the next several days.

If you ever have a preference about a topic that you'd like to
see discussed, feel free to write or contribute a topic. I'm
always interested in hearing from my brothers and sisters in
Christ.

Your brother in Christ,
Brian

BIBLE READING

John 4:1-38

OVERVIEW
The Samaritan woman at the well discusses salvation with
Jesus.

INSIGHT
"God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in
spirit and truth" (v.24). God is seeking such "true
worshipers" (v.23).

God is not worshiped with buildings though we use them.
God is not worshiped through liturgies or songs alone.
God is not worshiped only by our physical presence in a
worship service. God is worshiped "in spirit and truth."

Buildings, liturgies, and songs can aid in worship; but
they are not worship. Just as going into a barn does not
make one a cow, so going into a church does not make one
a true worshiper. The heart attitude is everything. You
can worship without these "things"and you can fail to
worship even with these "things."

When you are in personal or corporate worship, you must
mean what you say, sing, and pray. You must affirm the
truth you hear or read in the Scriptures. Only then are
you worshiping.

PRAYER

* Praise the Lord that He, in His mercy, grants His
children the privilege of
worshiping Him:

Praise the Lord!
Oh, give thanks to the Lord, for He is good!
For His mercy endures forever.
Who can utter the mighty acts of the Lord?
Who can declare all His praise?...
Blessed be the Lord God of Israel
From everlasting to everlasting!
And let all the people say, "Amen!"
Praise the Lord! (Psalm 106:1-2,48).

* Now pray this confession to the Lord:

If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves,
and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins,
You are faithful and just to forgive us our sins and
to cleanse us from all unrighteousness (based on
1 John 1:8-9).

* As you confess any sins that the Holy Spirit brings
to your mind, voice your affirmation of His Word:

For we did not receive the spirit of bondage again to
fear, but we received the Spirit of adoption by whom
we cry out, "Abba, Father" (based on Romans 8:15).

* As you make your requests known to the Lord, pray
for:

sensitivity to sin,
the ministry of your church,
the concerns of your heart.

* Close with this prayer of worship:

"Blessing and honor and glory and power
Be to You who sits on the throne,
And to the Lamb, forever and ever!"
(based on Revelation 5:13
