Word for Today, Wed, 1 Aug 2001: Earnest and Eager

Posted by: masinick <masinick@...>

Dear friends,

This week, the Quiet Walk Devotional from Walk Through the Bible
has been focusing on the apostle Paul's intention to visit Rome
and the early Christian church there. They have covered the last
few chapters of the book of Acts, which gives a historical
account of the acts of the apostles, first focusing on Peter and
John, then later on Paul. This message is a continuation of that
sequence of messages.

Neil Anderson also has some really good messages this week. Both
Quiet Walk and Neil Anderson's messages are provided by
Crosswalk, com as a courtesy to those seeking an intimate
and personal relationship with God.

Today's Quiet Walk follows the typical pattern of introducing a
message, then leading us with suggested prayers, which include
praise and adoration to God, confession of sin, thanksgiving for
what God has done, and requests on the behalf of others. All of
these are good practices to follow. Though this is but one
suggested format, it is a good one.

Your Brother in Christ,
Brian

BIBLE READING

Romans 1:1-17

OVERVIEW
Paul begins his epistle to the Roman Christians by
declaring his eagerness to visit them.

INSIGHT
Paul prayed earnestly that he might be able to visit the
Christians in Rome and minister to them. Paul did visit
them as we read in the last chapter of Acts but
probably not in the way he envisioned. When Paul finally
arrived, he was in chains (Acts 28:16).

Yet Paul declared he was at peace and ready to be made a
sacrifice for the sake of the Gospel. Forsaking the
things of this world was his basis for contentment. Paul
lived only to serve the Lord Jesus Christ.

We become discontented when we do not respond to the
Lord's challenge to forsake the things of this world and
live solely for Him. If we yield our lives to Christ,
then we view material possessions as tools to serve Him.

PRAYER

* Praise God that He accepts our
worship:

The Lord is the true God;
He is the living God and the everlasting
King. . . .
He has made the earth by His power,
He has established the world by His wisdom,
And has stretched out the heavens at His
discretion (Jeremiah 10:10,12).

* Pray this confession to the Lord to
keep your life free from sin and in
fellowship with Him:

Have mercy upon me, O God,
According to Your lovingkindness;
According to the multitude of Your tender
mercies,
Blot out my transgressions (Psalm 51:1-3).

* As you confess your sins, voice your affirmation of
His Word:

Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on
us, that we should be called children of God!
Therefore the world does not know us, because it did
not know Him. Beloved, now we are children of God;
and it has not yet been revealed what we shall be,
but we know that when He is revealed, we shall be
like Him, for we shall see Him as He is (1 John 3:1-2).

* As you make your requests known to the Lord, pray
for:

sensitivity to sin,
the ministry of your church,
your unsaved friends.

* Close with this prayer of worship:

To Him who is the blessed and only
Potentate, the King of kings, the Lord of lords, who
alone has immortality, dwelling in unapproachable
light, whom no man
has seen or can see, to whom be honor
and everlasting power. Amen
(based on 1 Timothy 6:15-16)
