Word for Today, Wed, 11 Oct 2000: Understanding our purpose

Posted by: masinick <masinick@...>

Dear friends,

I don't know how many times I have heard the kind of argument
mentioned in today's Quiet Walk Devotional. If you want a
different perspective about all of this, read the Gospel of John,
chapter nine. In it, Jesus tells the story of the blind man who
was healed. The Pharisees wanted to know who sinned, the man or
his parents.

Read and understand Jesus' response, and perhaps the truth of the
Word will shine through. To simplfy things, we are God's
creation, not the opposite. We cannot begin to understand every
purpose that God has for our lives. Most of the time, we only
see things in retrospect. Therefore, many things become a matter
of faith.

I have to ask the question:

Why do we have so much difficulty believing the good things of
God? We seem to find it so much easier to believe the
half-truths of other people, when they so less frequently even
turn out to be true. I challenge everyone to take God at His
word.

As for me, I desire to tell the truth, and I desire to do what is
right, but let's get real for a moment. Have I EVER been less
than honest? You know I have. I make errors. Far too many of
them to count. Is any of you any different? I would be
extremely surprised to hear differently.

If that is the case, then every one of us need a relationship
with our Creator, who provides everything we need. To me, it is
not an issue of love. I believe that God IS love.

BIBLE READING
2Corinthians 4:8-15

OVERVIEW

Life's lies: "God cannot be a God of love if He allows
pain."

INSIGHT

The classic statement of the problem of pain is: "If God
is all good and all powerful, then from whence cometh
evil?" The direct implication is that if God is all good,
He would do away with evil and that if He were all
powerful, He would be able to do so. This leads us to
this statement: "Since evil still exists, God must be
neither all good nor all powerful."

Resolving this problem for the unbeliever takes pages and
volumes. The Christian, however, already has accepted the
goodness and power of God. Yet he is tempted to cry out,
"Why me?!?" when pain comes into his life.

The Bible teaches that sin causes pain and that someday
God will put an end to sin. In the meantime, He promises
to give us grace to bear our pain.

PRAYER

* We praise God our Father that His grace is sufficient for us:

O God, my heart is steadfast; I will sing and give
praise, even with my glory. . . . I will praise You, O
Lord, among the peoples, And I will sing praises to You
among the nations. For Your mercy is great above the
heavens, And Your truth reaches to the clouds. Be
exalted, O God, above the heavens, And Your glory above
all the earth (Psalm 108:1,3-5).

* Now pray this confession to the Lord to keep your life free
from sin and in

fellowship with Him: O Lord, do not rebuke me in Your
anger, Nor chasten me in Your hot displeasure. Have mercy
on me, O Lord, for I am weak; O Lord, heal me, . . . My
soul also is greatly troubled (Psalm 6:1-3).

* Confess any sins that the Holy Spirit brings to your mind. As
you agree with and submit yourself to God's will, pray this
affirmation to the Lord:

I reckon myself to be dead indeed to sin, but alive to
God in Christ Jesus my Lord (Romans 6:11).

* As you make your requests known to the Lord, pray for:

* faithfulness with your talents,

* your state and local leaders and civic affairs,

* today's activities.

* Finally offer this prayer to the Lord:

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow us All the days of
our lives; And we will dwell in the house of the Lord
Forever (Psalm 23:6).
