Word for Today, Wed, 15 Nov 2000, Accountable Encouragemen

Posted by: masinick <masinick@...>

Dear friends,

I meet with a small group of men on Sunday afternoons in what we
call a "Men's Huddle". It is a group of men who really want to
seek God with all of their hearts. Each of us in that group find
ourselves wanting a closer, deeper, more intimate relationship
with God, yet each of us finds ourselves falling short of that
objective.

Our purpose in meeting is to mutually encourage one another and
hold each other accountable for following through on our
intentions. So today, I'd like to encourage my friends in that
Huddle, but also encourage each one of you. I don't know about
you, but my faith has to be purposeful, intentional, and even
sacrificial. It is not too much, in my own mind, for God to ask
and even require our complete devotion to Him, considering all
that He has FIRST done for me, and for each one of us.

Therefore, in view of all of that, I offer these messages to each
of you. I'd like to point out one other thing. Just a quick
read of these messages is no substitute for a personal
relationship with God Himself. I only offer this stuff to you as
a possible catalyst for your own personal time with God.
Frankly, there is no substitute for reading the Bible,
meditating, and being quiet before God in prayer. You need not
be sitting in a quiet room to do all of that. I do much of my
own meditations in the shower or in the car, and throughout the
day. Your methods will almost certainly vary from mine.

Romans 5:3-5 - "We continue to shout our praise even when we're
hemmed in with troubles, because we know how troubles can develop
passionate patience in us, and how that patience in turn forges
the tempered steel of virtue, keeping us alert for whatever God
will do next. In alert expectancy such as this, we're never left
feeling shortchanged. Quite the contrary -- we can't round up
enough containers to hold everything God generously pours into
our lives through the Holy Spirit!" (The Message)

OVERVIEW

Work enables us to give to others.

INSIGHT

A fourth basis for the value of work is that it enables
us to have something to give to others who are less
fortunate than we are. Inherent within the Gospel is the
principle that those who "have" must share with those who
"do not have."

Also there is the principle that God's work must be
supported financially. This includes not only the needs
of a local church and domestic ministries but also the
commitment to financing the global pursuit of the Great
Commission.

Few of us have enough money to make a strategic
difference in any of these obligations; but together, as
God raises up His army, the needs are met.

God does not need our money; but He wants our hearts, and
the test of our hearts is whether or not we are willing
to give of our money. A job makes this possible.

PRAYER

* Thank the Lord and praise Him that He meets our every need:

You are the Rock, Your work is perfect; For all Your ways
are justice, A God of truth and without injustice;
Righteous and upright are You (Based on Deuteronomy 32:4).
The Lord lives! Blessed be my Rock! Let God be exalted, The
Rock of my salvation! (2 Samuel 22:47).

* Now pray this confession to the Lord:

I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
Marvelous are Your works, And that my soul knows very
well... Search me, O God, and know my heart; Try me, and
know my anxieties; And see if there is any wicked way in
me, And lead me in the way everlasting (Psalm 139:14,
23-24).

* Confess any sins that the Holy Spirit brings to your mind. As
you agree with God's will, voice your affirmation of His Word:

"This is My commandment, that you love one another as I
have loved you" (John 15:12).

* As you make your requests known to the Lord, pray for:

* faithfulness with your talents,

* wisdom in distributing the financial resources God has given
you,

* your state and local leaders and civic affairs.

* Offer this closing prayer to the Lord:

O Lord, You have recompensed me according to my
righteousness, According to the cleanness of my hands in
Your sight (Based on Psalm 18:24).

Colossians 3:22-24

OVERVIEW

We serve Christ through our work.

INSIGHT

The final factor that gives meaning to our work is that
through it we serve Christ. A monk once declared to
Mother Teresa that his vocation was to give himself for
the lepers. Mother Teresa smiled and said, "Your vocation
is not to work for the lepers. Your vocation is to belong
to Jesus."

Whatever our earthly jobs, our vocation is to belong to
Jesus and to be faithful to whatever He asks of us. In
doing so, we serve Him.

Paul writes in today's passage that even as menial a task
as being a slave is to be fulfilled "as to the Lord" (v.
23). Paul assures us that we will receive a reward from
the Lord for our faithful service in what God has called
us to do. Then he declares: "You serve the Lord Christ"
(v. 24). We serve Christ by being faithful to whatever
job He has given us, and we will be rewarded richly for
it.

PRAYER

* The Lord sees and rewards our faithful labor, and for that we
offer Him our praise:

"O Lord God of Israel, the One who dwells between the
cherubim, You are God, You alone, of all the kingdoms of
the earth. You have made heaven and earth" (2 Kings 19:15).
"Lord God of Israel, there is no God in heaven above or on
earth below like You, who keep Your covenant and mercy with
Your servants who walk before You with all their hearts" (1
Kings 8:23).

* Now pray this confession to the Lord to keep your life free
from sin and in fellowship with Him:

I come to You, O Lord, to reason together with You. Though
my sins are like scarlet, They shall be as white as snow;
Though they are red like crimson, They shall be as wool
(Based on Isaiah 1:18).

* Confess any sins that the Holy Spirit brings to your mind. As
you agree with God's will, voice your affirmation of His
Word:

"And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only
true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent" (John 17:3).

* As you make your requests known to the Lord, pray for:

* greater passion for moral excellence,

* the ministry of Christian education institutions,

* today's activities.

* Now offer this closing prayer to the Lord:

Oh, satisfy us early with Your mercy, That we may rejoice
and be glad all our days! (Psalm 90:14).
