Word for Today, Wed, 17 Jan 2001: A Chain of Encouragement?

Posted by: masinick <masinick@...>

Dear friends,

I can identify with Anne Russell in this message. Surprisingly
often, I get mail, suggesting that I forward something on to
everyone I know. Some of the ideas are even fairly decent, but I
bristle (the hairs on my neck stiffen) when someone suggests that
I form or continue some kind of chain letter.

But I like Anne's idea of sharing encouragement, by way of
scripture, kind words of encouragement, and prayer. Are you
offended by suggestions of "if you (... fill in the blank ... )
send this to everyone you know? Sometimes, I am too. So let's
take this opportunity instead to give thanks to God for all that
He has done for us, to think about what is kind, considerate, the
essence of love, as the apostle Paul shares with us in Romans 12
and 1 Corinthians 13.

As far as passing on a message, I would suggest doing so in
person. Is there anyone who you know who could use some
encouragement today? Spend some quiet time in prayer, and ask
God to remind you of people around you who are in need. I don't
know about you, but in my life, it doesn't take very long at all
to remember someone nearby who is needy... they are all over the
place, I just have to slow down long enough to consider someone
other than myself.

Dear Lord,

Purify my heart today, in order that I may find You continually
near, and that I may recognize Your Presence and give You praise.
Remove the impurities that are in me today, and help me to
encourage my neighbors and friends, demonstrating in my own life
an attitude of kindness, sharing, and goodness, things that
clearly come from You. May this attitude be my acceptable act of
worship to You today. Bless our land with kindness, that we may
be kind to one another, and return the praise to You, which You
so richly deserve. I ask these things humbly, in Jesus' precious
Name. Amen.

Today's Devotional

Something Good Came Today

Hebrews 13:16 - And do not forget to do good and to share with
others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased. (NIV)

We all receive a lot of junk mail, either by the post or e-mail.
In my mail, however, was something a friend sent to me, and I
wish share it with you.

In the context of the letter were these lines:

Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind
word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act
of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around.
People come into our lives for a reason, a season, or a lifetime.
Embrace all equally! Then came the words, "Send this to people
who have touched your life in a special way. Let them know how
important they are."

I felt a special closeness, not only to the person who sent this
message to me, but to God. In turn I wanted to share them with
all my friends.

I wanted to forward this message, but it is not something I often
do. So I have used these special words in a devotional for all to
read and to ponder. My prayer is that we might use this one
paragraph as a guide to Christian living. Let us think of the
difference it could make in this world today.

Romans 12:9-13 - Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling
to what is good. Be devoted to one another in brotherly love.
Honour one another above yourselves. Never be lacking in zeal,
but keep your spiritual fervour, serving the Lord. Be joyful in
hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. Share with God's
people who are in need. Practise hospitality. (NIV)

Prayer: Heavenly Father, we come to the throne of Your grace
today. Draw us closer to you and to each other. Help us to be
more like the people you would have us to be -- caring, loving,
thoughtful, patient. It is only through You we can have that hope
and love to share. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
