Word for Today, Wed, 24 Jan 2001: Please Pray

Posted by: masinick <masinick@...>

Dear friends,

Most of you know that I place a great deal of emphasis in my
letters on the importance of prayer. I recently offered you
something that I have chosen to take part in, "100 Days Of
Prayer", a targeted effort to pray specifically for the leaders
of our country, and our country as a whole. My personal opinion
is that praying for our country and our leaders is something the
Bible commands us to do, so it is not something that should
require a campaign. The Bible does not command us to join every
pledge, every activity. That is not the emphasis at all.

At the same time, there can be value in joining with others in
prayers. It can be helpful to realize that our problems are not
unique, we are not "in it alone", and besides that, God likes us
to pray (talk) with Him.

It is not, therefore, a mandate to join a list, or this list, in
order to be within the will of God. One thing I would ask of
each of you is to be in prayer for one another, for our leaders,
for our nation, and for our world. I offer the "100 Days of
Prayer" to you as a tool, should you be interested.

Dear Lord,

Thank You so much for Your Holy Spirit that teaches me, leads
me, corrects me, and helps me every day. I confess that I am
needy. Without Your Holy Spirit, my life would be in vain - in
fact, it would be without purpose. I appreciate You and seek
Your guidance. Help me continue to learn and grow in You, until
all that can be seen is You.

Lord of mercy, I thank You that I live in a place where I can
freely worship You, where I have liberties that many others would
(and have) died for. Please remind me of these liberties that
You have granted, so that I may fully appreciate them and offer
my thanksgiving to You for them.

I lift up my government before You today, Lord. I am encouraged
by the early signs of what our President would like to do.
Please be ever near him, leading him, so he can bring our country
honor, but more importantly, that we can continue to worship You
in freedom, and not continually bring a stench before You.
Forgive us of our many collective sins, the sins of failing to
recognize the value of every life: man, woman, child, and even
unborn children. I pray that You would bring an awareness to
each of us, both individually and collectively, of the things
that offend You, and lead us into a state of repentence, so that
we turn away from all offensive things.

I pray that the words: "One nation, under God, indivisible, with
liberty and justice for all" would revive and take on their
original intent. How I cry for our broken family and society
that has lost its way. I am needy, we are needy. Please claim
us once again, and draw each of us back to You. I ask each of
these things with great humility, in Jesus' Name. Amen.

PRAYER POINTS FOR JANUARY 23-29:

1. THANK THE LORD that President Bush's first act was to proclaim
a day of Thanksgiving and Prayer! Pray for a mighty move of God's
Spirit as people across this nation commit to pray for our
leaders.

2. LIFT UP THE NEW ADMINISTRATION as final cabinet members are
sworn in, staffs are hired, and new agendas are set. The next few
days are crucial.

3. PRAY FOR A NEW SPIRIT OF CIVILITY in our political
debate. This was one of the main themes of the President's
inaugural address. Pray that God would use Christians in
Washington, D.C., to lead the way in this area.

4. CONTINUE TO LIFT UP SEN. ASHCROFT as he faces confirmation
votes this week. Ask God to raise up more men and women who are
committed to Christ and the high calling of statesmanship.

5. On the anniversary of Roe v. Wade, PRAY FOR A "CULTURE OF
LIFE" to be established in our land.
