Word for Today, Wed, 27 Jun 2001: Prayer Focus

Posted by: masinick <masinick@...>

Dear friends,

I did not get a chance to write a column for you during the day
on Wednesday. My dear wife even pointed out that she did not
have any electronic mail from me on Wednesday!

Well, I did have some material that I was looking at, but I did
not have the extra time needed to put together a message that I
could prayerfully consider. Therefore, instead, I would like to
offer you a message with a prayer focus, the periodical "Capital
Prayer Focus" newsletter. I signed up for this newsletter at a
time when we were requested to spend "100 days in prayer" for our
nation. Well, who says that we have to stop at 100 days, or
EVER, for that matter? My heart's desire is to be in
communication with my Creator forever, and as long as I have a
spirit, I will pray for others as well. Therefore, as brothers
and sisters in Christ, I urge you to join me in praying for
others. You'd be AMAZED at what that can do for US in the
process!

I will also be sending along a message in a while from my friend,
Larry Davies. He has written the third in a sequence of messages
entitled "A Different Way of Looking at Jesus: Angry" Part 3. My
personal prayer is that these messages are useful to stimulate
thought and interest in your own personal relationship with our
Lord. For that reason, I remain...

Your Brother in Christ,
Brian

Dear Mr. Brian Masinick,

Next week, America celebrates its 225th birthday!

Did you know that America's true Independence Day is actually
July 2, not July 4? That's right! Though the Declaration of
Independence was approved by the Continental Congress on July
4, 1776-announcing the separation of 13 North American British
colonies from Great Britain-it was on July 2, that a unanimous vote
of 12 colonies (with New York abstaining) resolved that "these
United Colonies are, and of right ought to be Free and Independent
States."

Did you also know that it is a Jewish tradition for the youngest child
at the annual Passover meal to ask the family patriarch, "What makes
this night different from any other?" This question opens the door
for regular remembrance of a special working of God in the lives of
the Israelites. What would you say if the youngest person in your
church asked you, "What makes July 4 different than any other
day?"

While July 4, or Independence Day, does not have the same biblical
stature as the Passover celebration, it is an important holy-day, with
surprisingly rich spiritual heritage.

For this week's Prayer Focus, we have listed key spiritual dates from
America's founding week that you can recall, and share with others
(particularly the youngsters of your church), as you continue to lift
up our nation's leaders in prayer.

Thank you once again and God Bless.

Dr. Frank Wright, Executive Director
Center for Christian Statesmanship

CAPITOL PRAYER FOCUS, JUNE 27, 2001
The Center for Christian Statesmanship
Washington, D.C.

+ + + + AMERICA'S BIRTHDAY WEEK

JULY 1, 1776
As the Continental Congress debated Independence, Massachusetts'
John Adams rose and said, "I am for the Declaration. It is my living
sentiment, and by the blessing of God, it shall be my dying
sentiment. Independence now, and Independence for ever!"

JULY 2, 1776
Just after 1:00 pm, the colonies passed a resolution of freedom from
Britain. Sam Adams declared: "We have this day restored the
Sovereign, to Whom alone men ought to be obedient."

JULY 3, 1776
The thrill of the preceding day's events inspired John Adams to
write two letters to his wife, Abigail. He said Independence Day
"Ought to be commemorated, as the Day of Deliverance, by solemn
acts of devotion to God Almighty."

JULY 4, 1776
The Declaration of Independence was formally adopted. It
established that "all men are created equal and are endowed, by their
Creator, with the unalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of
happiness" (or holiness, as the initial draft stated). The last sentence
of the historic document they signed read: "And for the support of
this declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of divine
Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our lives, our fortunes
and our sacred honor."

In other words, to do the right thing, they were prepared to pay any
price, even their very lives. . . Does this kind of sacrifice remind
you of anyone in particular (hint: Jesus)?

JULY 8, 1776
The Declaration was, for the first time, publicly declared outside
Independence Hall while the ringing of the Liberty Bell sounded
across Philadelphia.

+ + + + PRAYER POINTS

++Thank God for His faithfulness to our land over the past 225
years. Beginning July 1, take time each day to remember the
sacrifices made by the Christian patriots who founded our country.

++Follow John Adams' advice and set aside time on July 4 for
"solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty" amidst the fun,
festivities, and fireworks.

++Lift up your senators, congressman, and their staffs this week as
they take a much-needed July 4 recess. Pray that they will
find a break from the crushing demands of Capitol Hill and take
time to reflect on God's providential care of our great nation.

++Continue to pray for the President and Mrs. Bush, their family
and the entire White House staff. Ask God to cover and protect
them. Pray for wisdom and insight.

++Lift up the Center's upcoming outreaches in July, including the
July 10 Politics & Principle luncheon with House Majority Whip
Tom DeLay.
