Word for Today, Wed, 3 Oct 2001: Changes: A Reason to Praise God

Posted by: masinick <masinick@...>

Dear friends,

There are so many things around us that we would like to see
differently - we'd like things to change. Some of them are
things that we can influence, perhaps even change ourselves.
Other things are areas far beyond our own control. If there is
anything good about the recent set of events (including
yesterday's incident on a bus, resulting in ANOTHER
transportation shutdown - this time, Greyhound bus), it is the
realization that there are more things that are beyond our
control (by far) than there are things that we can personally
control.

That realization ought to teach us that there is a power greater
than ourselves, even though so many people either deny or ignore
that power. I am referring, of course, to the Spirit of the
Living God, also known as the Holy Spirit of God.

I believe that it is God's Spirit, alive and at work, that brings
hope to the hopeless, strength to the weak, help for the
helpless, forgiveness for those who fail, and a love far greater
than our own. Every tine I get conceited and think that I can do
things on my own, I am humbled once again and reminded of this
truth.

This same God is slow to anger, abounding in mercy, and quick to
forgive. Yet God IS a God of judgement, and for those who refuse
to accept His gift of love, there is judgement. All of us are
guilty, and are unable to stand innocent on our own, yet this
same God provides an advocate, one who completely erases our
guilt. That person is Jesus Christ, and His gift is that He paid
the penalty of our guilt - our sin. For that one great act of
love, He deserves all of our praise and adoration, for He bore
the guilt and shame we deserve, in our place. That's why I
praise Him, for He is forever worthy of praise. The following
message leads us to consider His ways, acknowledge Him, and
praise Him, and I invite you to join me in praising God, because
of Jesus Christ.

Your Brother in Christ,
Brian

BIBLE READING

2Corinthians 3

OVERVIEW
The Corinthians' changed lives are proof of Paul's
ministry.

INSIGHT
Men cannot change others spiritually; only God can. If
you see lives being changed spiritually, it is a sign
that God is at work. If many people are growing
spiritually as a result of the ministry of one person, it
is a sign that God has chosen to work through that
person. Paul said, "Not that we are sufficient of
ourselves to think of anything as being from ourselves,
but our sufficiency is from God" (2 Corinthians 3:5).

For us to become conceited as a result of spiritual
growth in the lives of the people to whom we are
ministering is a misunderstanding of how growth takes
place. If people are growing through your ministry,
praise God for the joy of being used by Him; but do not
take credit for the growth. That belongs to God.

PRAYER

* Thank your wonderful Savior for
reconciling you with God and for molding you into His
likeness:

Oh, magnify the Lord with me,
And let us exalt His name together...
The Lord redeems the soul of His servants, And none
of those who trust in Him shall be
condemned (Psalm 34:3,22).

* Now pray this confession to God Almighty as you seek
to keep your life aligned with His will:

God is jealous, and the Lord avenges;
The Lord avenges and is furious.
The Lord will take vengeance on His
adversaries,
And He reserves wrath for His enemies;
The Lord is slow to anger and great in power,
And will not at all acquit the wicked.
The Lord has His way
In the whirlwind and in the storm,
And the clouds are the dust of His feet (Nahum 1:2-3).

* Confess any sins the Holy Spirit brings to your
attention. As you agree with God's will, voice your
affirmation of His Word:

I long for Your salvation, O Lord,
And Your law is my delight.
Let my soul live, and it shall praise You;
And let Your judgments help me
(Psalm 119:174-175).

* Now make your requests known to the Lord. Pray for:

contentment with your circumstances,
those who minister to the homeless,
the missionaries your church supports.

* Close your devotional time by
meditating on God's awesome deeds:

I will praise You, O Lord, with my whole
heart;
I will tell of all Your marvelous works (Psalm 9:1)
