Dear friends,

You may wonder where I learn about the Bible. Well, I have
learned from many sources. I took a Confirmation class as an 11
year old boy, where I learned the books of the Bible, how to
locate them, and how to read them. That laid the foundation for
my growth. I have been fortunate enough to have gained a love of
reading. I gained this at an early age from my parents, who read
to me.

My heritage, on both sides of the family, was based on moral,
upright principles. My parents were raised Christian. Though
from different backgrounds, their values were similar. I was
taught right from wrong at an early age.

Just the same, I have had to make faith something I can call my
own. What a blessing it was to have a firm foundation. Given
that kind of foundation, I have cultivated my faith by attending
church, reading the Bible, praying, and spending time with others
who share similar values.

In recent years, as the Internet has become a popular place to
find information, I discovered that I could do not only computer
research online, but biblical research as well. Since it is
possible to find both good and bad things online, I have tried to
do something useful, and I've studied the Bible online since
around 1995.

One resource that I first heard of from a Christian friend were I
worked several years ago, but have not used much, until recently,
is the Web site,
bible.crosswalk.com/ParallelBible/bible.cgi. As the name
implies, it is possible to research two Bible passages at the
same time.

Just to give you a sample of what's available, I have chosen a
passage from Philippians 4 (one of my favorites). This passage
was written as a letter from the apostle Paul to the church at
Philippi.

There are two translations for each verse. The first translation
is a very recent translation called "The New Living Translation",
(NLT) noted for its easy, modern reading style. The second
translation, the New American Standard Bible (NASB or NAS) is
noted as one of the most word-for-word accurate Bible
translations
currently available.

If you choose to read this, (and I pray that you do), the NLT
comes first, then the NASB, verse by verse. The NASB also has
numerous cross references, literal word meanings, and other
footnotes. If you are a Bible scholar, or would like to become
one, NASB is arguably one of the best translations available. I
generally quote the well-known NIV (New International Version) of
the Bible. There is an easy reading edition of this out, called
the New International Reader's Version, or NIrV. The NIrV and
the NLT are two of the most current and easy to read versions of
the Bible.

Why did I do all of this? Well, I think reading the Bible is
important. If you look at these verses, you will not find large,
fundamental differences, but you might find little nuances of
differences. Sometimes, it is those little nuances that can
really help us to pull a deeper meaning out of words we are
familiar with. So I encourage you to take a good look at the
scripture from these translations (and others, if that interests
you). May God fill your heart with a new understanding of His
Precious Word. May that Word bless you, and bring our Lord great
honor and praise, for He is completely worthy of all honor and
praise.

they worked hard with me in telling others the Good News. And

who have shared my struggle in {the cause of} the gospel,

4:4 Always be full of joy in the Lord. I say it again: rejoice!

4:5 Let everyone see that you are considerate in all you do.

Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done.

more wonderful than the human mind can understand. His peace will
guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.

4:8 And now, dear brothers and sisters, let me say one more thing
as I close this letter. Fix your thoughts on what is true and
honorable and right. Think about things that are pure and lovely

of praise.

honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is
lovely, F57 whatever is of good repute, if there is any
excellence and if anything worthy of praise, dwell F58 on these
things.

4:9 Keep putting into practice all you learned from me and heard
from me and saw me doing, and the God of peace will be with you.

4:9 The things you have learned and received and heard and seen

with you.

4:10 How grateful I am, and how I praise the Lord that you are
concerned about me again. I know you have always been concerned
for me, but for a while you didn't have the chance to help me.

{before,} but you lacked opportunity.

4:11 Not that I was ever in need, for I have learned how to get
along happily whether I have much or little.

4:12 I know how to live on almost nothing or with everything. I
have learned the secret of living in every situation, whether it
is with a full stomach or empty, with plenty or little.

4:13 For I can do everything with the help of Christ who gives me
