Writing
Pencil Playground

Zema – Yes, I have heard of Pencil Playground and I’m presently using it. My 9yo who used to cry when I had a writing asignment for her now asks if she can work on Pencil Playground. I think the part she enjoys the best is that Mom can’t correct anything. This program is strictly the childs. It is written so they can work independently and it takes them through a step by step process of writing. There are 9 units each on a different topic. She has them answering questions, writing words then turning them into sentences. The Unit on fall, she had them go outside and experience what it is like to play in the leaves before answering questions. They write the sentences, cut them apart, put them in the order they would like them, has them read it out loud, and that’s the rough draft. The final copy is done in several different ways. They can write it neatly on paper, type it out, dictate into a tape recorder, or even dictate it to Mom or Dad and have them write it out. I talked to Jeannie Mulligan, the author of the curriculum, the other day and told her how excited Stevie was with Pencil Playground and she was also very excited. She told me that if Stevie sent her a copy of her story she would write her a letter. She is really interested in children enjoying writing. It says it’s for elementary grades but she’s used it successfully with high schoolers. She’s also coming out with another curriculum to teach outlining and note taking. If you would like more information her address is: Estella Graphics RR 3 Box 369 Montrose, PA 18801

Phone (717) 278-4504
Fax (717) 278-4230

Tell her Dar Sikorski sent you.

Hope this helps.

Dar in PA

PS I just re-read my note and realized I left out a part in the rough draft. After they read the story out loud then they glue in onto construction paper and that’s the rough draft. I also wanted to let you know that this is the only place where she feels you shouldn’t correct spelling etc. in their writing. In this course she says that these stories are their own and to correct or change anything makes it

yours and not theirs but it teaching English or Social Studies etc. the need to correct is there so they can learn to write correctly. I hope I explained her theory properly. If youcontact her I’m sure she can do a much better job of it. I think I’m done. Bye. PRODIGY(R) interactive personal service 10/30/92 11:55
