Impediments To Marriage

IMPEDIMENTS TO MARRIAGE

BASIC R.C. BELIEF Diriment impediments are those that render a marriage null and void. They are: solemn vow of chastity, close blood relationship, some adoptions, spiritual relationship (godparent or baptizer), bigamy, extreme youth, impotence or marriage by violence.

These differ from hindering impediments, which make a marriage lawful but invalid, i.e., simple vows of virginity, mixed religion or relationship through adoption.

POST VATICAN II The laws concerning impediments are constantly under review and subject to change; their application also varies from place to place.
