ISHMAELITES, The
- Descended from Abraham’s son, Ishmael (born BC 2082) # Ge 16:15,16
# 1Ch 1:28
- Also of Egyptian decent (552 years before Moses)
- Since Hagar was Egyptian and she picked an Egyptian wife for Ishmael, his offspring were 75% Egyptian.
- Circumcision of Ishmael was along with any other male in Abraham’s household – it was a sign of God’s covenant with Abraham, and with Isaac and his decendants only. So, God’s covenant is not with Ishmael’s decendants. To see this clearly, read Ge 17:7-8 where the covenant and decendants are mentioned by God, and that God grants the land of Canaan for an everlasting posession, to Abraham’s descendants. Then see Ge 17:18-21 where God denies Ishmael to even live in God’s sight, and that Ishmael is not part of God’s covenant (nor the posession of Canaan) given to Abraham. # Ge 17:10-14,21
- Blessed by God
- Despite living apart from Isaac, Ishmael re-united with Isaac to bury Abraham
- Divided into twelve tribes
- Heads of tribes
- Dwelled from Shur (100 miles west of Jerusalem, and adjacent to Egypt) to Havilah (~1000 miles southeast of Jerusalem, in the desert)
- For historical reference, Abraham originally came from Ur (near the land of Shinar, where the Tower of Babel was built), near the junction of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. After he was married to Sarai, he traveled with his father along the shoreline of the Euphrates river, northwest to Haran, and settled there. Haran was Abraham’s “home country”. # Ge 11:31
- When God called Abraham, he told him to go to Canaan (which was Abraham’s father’s original destination – not Haran), and God told Abraham “To your decendants, I will give this land.” Canaan contains the coastal areas between the River of Egypt and past Lebanon to the Euphrates River, including Jerusalem. # Ge 15:18-21
- Due to a famine in the area, Abraham went to Egypt to live for a while, and it is here that Sarai may have acquired her Egyptian maid, Hagar. # Ge 12:10
- This region of land is in harmony (no border overlap) with the region given to Abraham and Isaac, as the extent of Shur could be limited at the River of Egypt.
