OBEDIENCE BRINGS BLESSING
INTRODUCTION:
- The book was written in the fall of 520 B.C.
- The Jews who had returned from Babylon’s captivity were suffering due to putting God low on their priority
- God gave them encouragement to build the temple
- He would be with them
- This temple (although lesser) would have greater glory than Solomon’s temple
- The covenant was reaffirmed & fear was rebuked,
“My spirit remaineth among you: fear ye not”
- THE INFECTIOUS NATURE OF SIN
- Questions of Levitical purity (vv.12-13)
- Holiness by transfer?
- Uncleanness by transfer?
- People are unclean–acts are unclean (v.14)
(The insufficiency of limited obedience)
- One should consult the priest concerning the law (v.11)
II. DISOBEDIENCE–THE BASIS OF CHASTISEMENT
- Need to begin right if finish right (v.15)
- Foundation determines quality
- Look toward future
- Curse from God failed to bring repentance (v. 17)
- Possessions always less than needed (v.16)
- Days of cursing “were” (v.16)
III. OBEDIENCE–THE BASIS OF BLESSING
- When foundation of temple laid, God counts fresh (v.18)
- Cannot see it yet but God is blessing you (v.19)
- Promises recognize fulfillment LATER
- Sin–not Satan–may block fulfillment
RESTORATION OF DAVID’S THRONE
I. PREDICTION OF THE OVERTHROW OF THE GENTILE KINGDOMS (vv.20-22)
- Thrones are overthrone
- Strength of heathen kingdoms destroyed
- Chariots and riders overthrown
- Brothers will kill each other
II. PREDICTION OF THE RESTORATION OF THE THRONE OF DAVID (v.23)
- God’s “chosen” are kept safe
- “Take… my servant”
- “Make thee as a signet”
