INSTRUCTIONS
This recipe was given to me by my neighbor, Mae. Given to her by her
friend, Martha. I haven't the foggiest idea who Hester is but the recipe is
great and easy.
Put apples, water and sugar in a casserole dish and sprinkle with cinnamon.
Heat 15-20 minutes at 350. Remove from oven and place bread strips on top.
Mix 1 cup sugar, 1 stick melted butter, 1 egg and 1 tsp vanilla. Beat well
and pour over bread strips. Bake at 350 about 1 hour or until golden brown.
Martha made this pie using pears and it was really good, too. It was,
however, a little too sweet. I made it using apples and went exactly by the
recipe. Next time I make it, I will cut down 1/4 cup on the sugar. You
might want to check it after 45 minutes. I only baked it about 45-50
minutes at 350.
