INSTRUCTIONS
Cream shortening, add sugar and cream again. Add the eggs and beat well.
Sift together the flour, baking powder and nutmeg then add alternately with
milk to the first mixture. Add vanilla and stir in. Knead in more flour to
make a stiff dough then separate into 12 equal portions. Roll each one out
to 1/4 inch thick and pat into cake pans. Bake at 450 degrees until lightly
brown then set the layers aside to cool. Use a quart or 2 cans of
applesauce and mix in 1/2 teaspoon each of allspice and cinnamon. Stir well
then spread between layers. The Indians claim this as their own recipe but
some claim that it was brought to the states from Europe
