The Abomination Of Desolation

THE ABOMINATION OF DESOLATION

Written by Michael Dolim June 15, 1988

The Abomination of Desolation will take place in the middle of the Tribulation period when The Antichrist will declare himself to be God. This will cause the Temple to be unclean. The end of the desolation of the Temple (the purification) will be accomplished by Jesus Christ at His second coming.

MAJOR SCRIPTURE REFERENCES

In Matthew 24:15-16, Jesus said, “When ye, therefore, shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place (whosoever readeth, let him understand), then let them who are in Judaea flee into the mountains…”

Daniel wrote in chapter 9, verse 27 concerning The Beast, “And he -More-shall confirm the covenant with many for one week; and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make desolate, even until the consumation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate.”

Daniel 12:11-12, “And from the time that the daily sacrifice shall be taken away, and the abomination that maketh desolate set up, there shall be a thousand two hundred and ninety days. Blessed is he that waiteth, and cometh to the thousand threee hundred and five and thirty days.”

Daniel 11:31, “And forces shall stand on his part, and they shall polute the sanctuary of strength, and shall place the abomination that maketh desolate.”

WHAT IS THE ABOMINATION OF DESOLATION?

The word “abomination” is always used in connection with idolatry in the Bible. Idolatry is an abomination to the Lord. This particular abomination causes desolation, which means “to lay waste” or “leave alone”.

EXAMPLE OF THE ABOMINATION OF DESOLATION

The passage of Daniel 11:31 refers also to Antiochus Epiphanes, who in approximately 175-164 BC, slaughtered a sow in the Holy Place, which gave rise to the Maccabean Revolt.

THE FUTURE ABOMINATION OF DESOLATION

Jesus told us that this abomination which causes desolation is yet future. The Antiochus abomination is the closest act in history to cause such desolation, and is a type of the future abomination to be carried out by The Antichrist.
-MoreIn
the middle of the Great Tribulation, The Antichrist and the False Prophet will cause the sacrifices in the temple to cease and set up The Image of The Beast in the Holy Place in Jerusalem, and cause it to be worshiped.

Now, for the sacrifices in the temple to cease, it requires a temple, and the re-institution of Levitical sacrifices in Israel. This is the main reason we believe that Israel will rebuild The Temple and re-institute animal sacrifices.

EVENTS AFTER THE PURIFICATION OF THE TEMPLE

Now, the reference in Daniel 12 to 1290 days, and to 1335 days is controversial. Since the abomination takes place in the “middle of the week”, we have 1260 days from the abomination to the end of the seventy weeks. Daniel 12 says that there will be 1290 days, and gives no explanation as to what happens then. This is a 30 day discrepancy. Then, blessed is he that waits and comes to the 1335th day, which is 45 MORE days.

So, what goes on during the 75 day period from the end of the Seventieth week until the 1335th day?

John F. Walvoord, in his commentary on Daniel says, “Although Daniel does not explain these varying durations, it is obvious that the second coming of Christ and the establishment of His millennial kingdom requires time. The 1260 day period or precisely forty-two months of thirty days each, can be regarded as culminating with the second advent itself. This is followed by several divine judgments such as the judgment of the nations (Matthew 25:31-46), and the regathering and judgment of Israel (Ezekiel 20:34-38). These great judgments beginning with the living on earth and purging out of unbelievers who have worshiped the beast, although handled quickly, will require time. By the 1335 days, or seventy-five days after the second advent, these great judgments will have been accomplished and the millennial kingdom formally launched. Those who attain to this -More-period are obviously those who have been judged worthy to enter the kingdom. Hence, they are called blessed.”

Arnold Fruchtenbaum, in “Footsteps of the Messiah” suggests that a number of events will take place in this 75-day period:

  1. Removal of the Abomination of Desolation
  2. Removal of the Antichrist (Revelation 19:20)
  3. Removal of the False Prophet (Revelation 19:20)
  4. Binding of Satan (Revelation 20:1-3)
  5. Judgment of the Gentiles (Joel 3:1-3, Matthew 25)
  6. Resurrection of the Old Testament Saints (Isaiah 26:19)
  7. Resurrection of Tribulation Saints (Revelation 20:4)
  8. The First Resurrection (Revelation 20:5-6)
