The Feasts Of God

At the time of Christ’s ministry and of the early Church the ONLY scriptures that the people had was the OLD TESTAMENT, in Hebrew and the first five books, (the TORAH) translated into greek. this was called the SEPTUIGENT, after the approximately 70 scholars in Egypt who translated it. In addition to this, there was the oral traditions, which were later written into the MISHNAH, and numerous commentaries similar to those we have in christian bookstores, but from the perspectives of scholars in Orthdox Judaism. Notable among these are that of Gamaliel, Paul’s tutor , and his grandfather Hillel. This, the OLD TESTAMENT , is what is referred to in ; LUKE 24;25-27 where Christ speaks “Oh fools , and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken ; ought not Christ to have suffered these things and to enter into his glory?” and beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself. 32 …..He opened unto us the Scriptures. 45 He opened their understanding , that they might understand the Scriptures (when he gave them the great commission). MATT 21;42 LUKE 4;21 JOHN 2;22 JOHN 5;39 7;38 19;37 ACTS 8;32– 17;2 11 18;24,28 ROM 1;2 16;26 1COR 15;3,4 2 TIM 3;15 Jesus , of course had a whole different perspective on how to understand the word of God. Each great scholar had a different in- terpretation of what was meant, This because the LORD himself had blinded their eyes and stopped their ears (ISA 6:9,10 :JER 5:21; JOHN 12:40) SO in trying to grasp the simple truth in the scriptures they confused themselves and would only resort to quoting the authority of some of the great rabbis who would in turn contradict each other. This to them was the solution, know all the answers of the rabbis , and use the ones that tickle your ears . No single Rabbi had the answer nor the authority to speak for God as the prophets did. This is why they were all astonished at the authority with which the deciples and Jesus spoke , saying” never a man spoke like this ” or When they saw the boldness of Peter and John , and percieved that they were unlearned and ignorant men, they marvelled , and took knowledge that they had been with Jesus. He would have us understand ,though, and exhorts us to study . Moreover He gives us the HOLY SPIRIT to teach us . So we have a great deal to study in the Old Testament in order to see CHRIST in it , IN O.T. manifestations called THEOPHANIES IN PROPHECIES IN TYPES , or word pictures,

This last way is somewhat obscure , but I am sure you will be able to follow along as we look at Jesus in the feasts of The Lord and see how his redemption and other works are brought out in the scriptures. E THREE DIVISIONS BY SEASON F In Israel they did not celebrate Valentines , Easter etc.or for that matter any of the holidays as we know them, but the Lord commanded the Children of Israel: Ex 23;14-16 three times shalt thou keep a feast unto me in the year. Thou shalt keep the feast of unleavened bread …….. the first fruits of thy labours …..and the feast of ingathering . E SEVEN FEASTS F Of these three times in the year there are actually seven specific feasts and we shall deal with each of these as we have time. They are set out in Lev 23 Deut 16 in the law and commented on in other passages. E LOOK FOR FOUR THINGS; F 1. The simple intent for Israel.a memorial as to what God has done for Israel 2. the fulfillment in Christ 3. the fulfillment in the Church 4. the fulfillment in our personal salvation

In old times people would search thuought the house with candles or lamps to be sure that there was none left. At even the day before , the children go about with a candle and a feather and sweep up the few pieces left just for them onto a wooden’ spoon from where they are placed a bag to burn. E WHAT IS MOTZA? F Motza is a thin biscuit ,prepared from parched grain. To be Kosher for passover ,it must not have gotten damp or have occasion to be mixed with other foods that might contain yeast.(leaven) it is therefore baked very quickly also, in order that no yeast naturally present in the grain would have a chance to grow and cause the lump to ferment, and therefore rise like our current sourdough bread, which is what they would normally have used day to day. In addition to yeast bread they would also have to clean their house of any grain product that was not deemed KASHER LEPESAH(clean for passover). This might include macarroni, sealed bags of flour, or anything that may have gotten damp enough to begin to ferment. Motza always has stripes of pierce marks on it, in rows like furrows. ISA 53 …..By his stripes we are healed PS 22;14 …all my bones are out of joint 16 they pierced my hands and feet, 17 I can count all my bones The middle of three pieces on the passover table is broken The piece of this which is “hidden” is consumed with the forth cup of wine, this was the AFIKOMEN , of which Christ said, “this is my body which is broken for you” 15 SEVEN days shall ye eat unleavened bread; even the first day shall ye put away leaven out of your houses; for whosoever eateth leavened bread from the first day until the seventh day , that soul shall be cut off from Israel. 16 And in the first day a holy convocation , and in the seventh day there shall be a holy convocation to you ; no manner of work shall be done in them, save that which every man must eat, that only may be done of you . 17 And ye shall observe the feast of unleavened bread for in this selfsame day have I brought your armies out of the land of Egypt: Therefore ye shall observe this day in your generations by an ordinance for ever.

E SPEAKS OF SANCTIFICATIONF –OUR CONDITION PURITY GETTING THE LEAVEN OUT WESLEY’S MESSAGE EX 12:34 And the people took their dough BEFORE IT WAS LEAVENED, their kneeding thoughs being bound up in their clothes, upon their shoulders :39 And they baked unleavened cakes of the dough which they brought fourth out of Egypt, for it was not leavened because they were thrust out of Egypt, and could not tarry neither had they prepared for themselves any victual. :43 And the LORD said unto Moses and Aaron, this is the ordinance of the passover, There shall no stranger eat thereof. COMPARE this with 1 COR 11:27-31 What does this say to us ? ___________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________ EX 13:6 SEVEN days shalt thou eat unleavened bread, and in the seventh day shall be a feast unto the LORD. 7 Unleavened bread shall be eaten seven days, and there shall no leaven be seen with thee, neither shall there be leaven seen with thee in all thy quarters. ÉÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍ» º #4E PENTECOSTF º º º ÈÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍ&fraq14; E FEAST OF WEEKS F E FEAST OF HARVEST NEW GRAIN OFFERING F E FREEWILL OFFERING F DEUT 16 9-12 EX 23 14-16 Originally started as a wheat harvest festival, this feast has several things of different nature from the other feasts. it was only one day long. It stood alone ,not like the other feasts which came in groups of threes, however it is timed from the “time when the sickle is first put to the barley harvest. this time cioncides with the feast of firstfruits ,and was somehow recognised on the sabbath, because the feast of weeks is seven weeks and one day later (lev 23:16) “You shall count fifty days to the day after the seventh sabbath.” Because it had no fixed date, but only to be celebrated fifty days after the offering of the OMER of the first sheaf of barley, it was therefore a matter of great discussion during the period of the second temple. The pharisees thought that the omer was offered on the 16 of Nissan (Abib),thus Shovuos would come on the sixth of Sivan, but the Saducees thought that the omer was offered the first sunday after Pesah, thus it would always fall on the seventh sunday after Pesah. This is the time celebrated by the CHURCH, Samaritans and Karaites, while Orthodox Jews follow the tradition of the Pharisees. There were some prescribed offerings to be made by the levitical priesthood on behalf of the people; two loaves of LEAVENED bread – a wave offering seven one year old lambs ÄÄ¿ a bull ÃÄÄ a burnt offering two rams ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÙ a soothing aroma to ÚÄÄ grain offerings the LORD ÀÄÄ drink offerings one male goat – a sin offering two male lambs – a peace offering In addition there were freewill offerings to be made by each individual (Deut 16:10 )” …a tribute of a freewill offering of your hand, which you shall give just as the LORD your God blesses you. And you shall rejoice before the LORD your GOD It not only was to be a time of offering, but also came to be known as the date on which Moses received the law on mount Sinai. A simple glance at Ex 19:1 “In the third month ….on that very day they came into the wilderness of Sinai.” will indicate that this is quite possible, if not probably true, although there is no direct biblical proof. It was also at one time thought to be the anniversary of the covenant of God with Noah (book of Jubilees ch6), but the giving of the law on Sinai tradition eclipsed this thought, and became the spiritual focus of this celebration.

It is traditionally the day on which the jewish boys are confirmed “BAR MITZVEH” or sons of the commandment, when they are old enough to be responsible for their own sins. It is also the day on which the book of RUTH is read in the synagogue, telling of her acceptance into the fold of Israel, redemption by her kinsman, not to mention her kinship to the messiah, for she was to be the grandmother of David, out of whom was to issue the Christ. As the teacher sings or interprets the AKDOMUS he paints a vivid picture of the blissful days of the Messiah, golden thrones approached by seven stairs and sitting on the thrones , saints bathed in light in His Kingdom. A curious custom and totally unexplained is that of Morroccan Jews who pour water over each other, paying no heed to the holiday clothes. It does not require much imagination, however, to see a similarity to the first time that The church celebrated this feast. Since the meaning of the word BAPTIZO is to sprinkle and the word BAPTIZIMO means to whelm. The out pouring of the HOLY SPIRIT on that very day seems to not only be a fulfillment of Joel 2: as Peter declared on thet day Acts 2:17-21), but also of : JER 31:31/4 Behold days are coming saith the LORD, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah, Not like the covenant which I made with their fathers in the day I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt, My covenant which they broke, although I was a husband to them, declares the LORD. But this is the covenant which I will make with the House of Israel after those days ,declares the Lord, Iwill put my law within them and on their heart will I write it : And I will be their GOD and they shall be MY PEOPLE ACTS 2 38,39 Repent and be baptized for the remission of sins and you shall recieve the gift of the HOLY GHOST. For the promise is to you and to your children And for all who are far off, as many as the LORD our GOD shall call. DEUT 16:13-15 Thou shalt keep the Feast of Tabernacles seven days after that ythou hast gathered in from thy threshingfloor, and from thy winepress And thou shalt rejoice in thy feast Thou and thy son and thy daughter and thy man-servant and thy maid-servant and the Levite and the stranger and the fatherless and the widow, that are within thy gates. FIFTEENTH DAY – Like passover, this feast is to be commenced at full

moon in th month TISHRI

BOOTHS- tabernacles Heb. SUCCOTH In EX. 23;16 it is called the feast of ingathering ; in rabbinic literature it known as THE FEAST (see John 7:37)In later times it the eighth day came to be known as HASHANNAH RABBAH (roughly the year’s plenty) ,the following day taking the name SIMCAH TORAH (Rejoicing in the LAW) the day on which the annual reading of the torah was completed and restarted.

THE SUCCAH itself represents a hastily constructed and unsubstantial edifice such as the Israelites set up during the wanderings in the wilderness

THE BOOK OF ECCLESIASTES is set aside for reading on the eighth day

(ATZERETH)

GOODLY TREES – traditionally the citron (ethrog)

THICK TREES – traditionaly the leafy Myrtle, HADASSAH

THey are not to appear before the LORD empty. what does this say to us?

Deut 16;16 ______________________________________________________

“Message of the feast is that there is shelter in the tabernacle of God under the wings of the shekinah glory , for the Jew first and also to the gentiles. Prophetically what does this mean? _________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________

There were three outstanding features which characterised the TEMPLE service at this feast. 1. The pouring of water in the Temple. The first thought of the participants was thanks for the rain in the proper season. But it was prophetic of the outpouring of the HOLY SPIRIT . JOHN 7:37,38 speaks of this occasion ,when as the water from the pool of SILOAM was being poured into the altar basin amidst the blast of the shofar and and the singing of the HILLEL PSALMS (113-118) by the Levites, saying ” HOSANNAH , SAVE NOW, I BESEECH THEE O LORD “; “BLESSED IS HE THAT COMETH IN THE NAME OF THE LORD; WE HAVE BLESSED YOU OUT OF THE HOUSE OF THE LORD. and when as the messianic fervor was at its highest OUR LORD JESUS THE MESSIAH said E”IF ANY MAN THIRST LET HIM COME UNTO ME ,AND DRINK HE THAT BELIEVETH ON ME AS THE SCRIPTURE HATH SAID , OUT OF HIS BELLY SHALL FLOW RIVERS OF LIVING WATER. F ISA 55:1 Ho every one that thirsts come to the waters ISA 58:11 and the LORD will continually guide you and satisfy your desire in scorched places …. and you will be like a watered garden, and like a spring whose waters do not fail. ISA 44:3 For I will pour out my water on the thirsty land and streams on the dry ground ; and I will pour out my spirit on your offspring , and my blessing on your descendants.

2. The illumination of the temple. The festive pilgrims came to the temple bearing lights and torches, while inside the temple the golden lampstand was lighted, changing the dim evening of Jerusalem into a brilliant focus of light illuminating the entire surroundings, amid praises of E”GOD IS THE LORD WHICH HAS SHOWED US LIGHT;BIND THE SACRIFICE WITH CORDS TO THE ALTAR. THOU ART MY GOD AND I WILL PRAISE THEE; THOU ART MY GOD , IWILL EXALT THEE .F How beautifully this speaks of OUR LORD who standing in the temple proclaimed E”I AM THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD. F It speaks even more, prophetically when in heaven John by revelation says, (Rev 21 ;23-24) .. and the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it for the GLORY OF GOD did lighten it, and the LAMB is the light thereof. And the nations of them that are saved shall walk in the light of it ; … 3. THE PRAISES . Again John writes of thr greater feast of SUCCOTH “E AFTER THIS I BEHELD , AND LO, A GREAT MULTITUDE , THAT NO MAN COULD NUMBER , OF ALL NATIONS , AND KINDREDS, AND PEOPLE , AND TONGUES, STOOD BEFORE THE THRONE, AND BEFORE THE LAMB , CLOTHED IN WHITE ROBES, AND PALMS IN THEIR HANDS: AND CRIED WITH A LOUD VOICE ,SAYING HOSANNAH (SALVATION) TO OUR GOD WHICH SITTETH UPON THE THRONE, AND UNTO THE LAMB.F Rev 7;9,10

HISTORICALLY it was observed thruought the O.T. 2 CHRON 8;13 IN SOLOMON’S REIGN 2 CHRON 31:3 IN HEZEKIAH’S REIGN EZRA 3:4 IN THE RETURN FROM EXILE NEHEM. 7:73-8:18 ” so the people went out …..and made for themselves booths each on his roof and in his court…..and there was great rejoicing . what a great fun filled way to learn the promises of GOD and to share them with our families.
