What the minister is is far more important than what he is able to do, for what he is gives force to what he does. In the long run, ministry is what we are as much as what we do.

A comparitive study of the doctrine versus actions of this group. The study is based on Mt. 23.

INTRODUCTION: Verse 3, do whatever they say–not what they do.

I. THEY TAUGHT PRAYER (v. 14 vs. vv. 5-7)

  1. They taught to pray long prayers (v. 14)
  2. They stole the glory from God by their pride in prayer

II. THEY TAUGHT EVANGELISM (v. 15 vs. v. 13)

  1. They worked hard to get others into their fold
  2. They taught them such impossible doctrine that they fell

III. THEY TAUGHT TITHING (v. 23 vs. vv. 16-22)

  1. They would tithe the smallest increase
  2. They emphasized the physical above the spiritual

IV. THEY TAUGHT RIGHTEOUSNESS (v. 28 vs. vv. 25-28)

  1. They wanted perfection
  2. They practice “outward righteousness”
  3. THEY TAUGHT HONOR FOR GOD’S PROPHETS (vv. 28, 30 vs. vv. 31-32,37)
  4. They built tombs for them and garnished them
  5. They refused to hear them
