- Flesh (Gr. Sarx), the body, as the symbol of what is external; human nature with its frailities & passions; carnal.
- THE FLESH IS WEAK (Mk. 14:38, “Watch ye and pray, lest ye enter
into temptation. The spirit truly is ready, but the flesh is weak”
- Gal. 5:17, “For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.”
- Gal. 6:8, “He that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption”
- Jn. 6:63, “It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing”
- Ro. 8:7-8, “The carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.”
- 2 Cor. 7:5 (like Paul), “When we were come into Macedonia, our flesh had no rest, but we were troubled on every side, without were fightings, within were fears.”
- 1 Cor 15:50, “Flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; neither doth corruption inherit incorruption.”
II. PAUL HAD CRUCIFIED THE FLESH (Gal. 5:24) “They that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts” A. Ro. 8:4, Jesus died “That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.” B. Ro. 13:14, “But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfill the lusts thereof” C. Gal. 2:20, “I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.” D. TEXT (2 Cor. 10:3), “For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh”
III. THE WORD (JESUS) WAS MADE FLESH (Jn. 1:14) “and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth” A. Ro. 8:3, “God sent his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh” B. Jn. 17:2, “Thou hast given [me] power over all flesh, that [I] should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given [me]”
