I. A DEVISIVE SPIRIT IS NOT OF GOD

  1. Rehoboam made a bad decision that should not be condoned
  2. God will judge all who do wrong – not us
    1. We would become “god”
    2. God is a “jealous” God
  3. Contentious men kindle strife according to Prov. 26:21

    (Word means argumentive, quarrelsome, char. by dispute

  4. Pr. 15:18, “A wrathful man stirreth up strife: but he that is slow to anger appeaseth strife.”
  5. Pr. 17:19, “He loveth transgression that loveth strife”
  6. Phil. 2:3, “Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves.”
  7. 2 Tim. 2:14, “Of these things put them in rememberance, charging them before the Lord that they strive not about words to no profit, but to the subverting of the hearers.” II. THE WISDOM OF KINDNESS
  8. The old men counselled Rehoboam to be kind to the people
  9. We should not try to compell others to fit our image
  10. The young men’s EVIL counsel
    1. Ps. 1:1, “Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly”
    2. Rehoboam listened to his friends rather than to God III. UNITY OF WORSHIP
  11. Jereboam understood this (Ps. 133) and said (v. 27), “If this

    people go up [to Jerusalem to worship]… they shall… go again to Rehoboam king of Judah”

  12. Brethren do not fight with each other (v. 24)
  13. Amos 3:3, “Can two walk together except they be agreed?”
  14. 1 Cor. 1:10, “Now I beseech you, brethern, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ,
    1. That ye all speak the same thing, and
    2. That there be no divisions among you;
    3. But that ye be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgement”
  15. Sustains: Ex. 17:12 “But Moses’ hands were heavy; and they

    took a stone, and put it under him, and he sat thereon; and Aaron and Hur stayed up his hands”

  16. Aids in prayer: Mt. 18:19, “Again I say unto you, That if two of you shall agree on earth as touching any thing that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father.” IV. EASE IN WORSHIP
  17. “Woe to those that be in ease in Zion”
  18. Jereboam said it was “too much” to ask them to go to Jerusalem so he built two calves to worship (Bethel & Dan)
  19. BETHEL (means”jealous”)
    1. Originally called Luz but name changed by Jacob
    2. Southern most border of Israel
    3. Actually in Benjamin (of Judah)
    4. Only 10-12 miles from Jerusalem
  20. DAN
    1. Northern most border (nearest to the world)
    2. About 25 miles North of Capernaum (Jesus’ home)
  21. “Behold thy gods which brought thee up” (for it is too much..)
  22. We must be “about our Father’s business”
