We Love God!

God: "I looked for someone to take a stand for me, and stand in the gap" (Ezekiel 22:30)

He stripped off first one robe of honor and then another until, naked, He was fastened to the cross. There He emptied His inmost self, pouring out His lifeblood, giving Himself for all of us. Finally, they laid Him in a borrowed grave. How low was our dear Redeemer brought! How then, can we be proud? Stand at the foot of the cross and count the scarlet drops by which you have been cleansed. See the thorny crown and His scourged shoulders still gushing with the crimson flow of blood. See His hands and feet given up to the rough iron, and His whole self mocked and scorned. See the bitterness, the pangs, and the throes of inward grief show themselves in His outward frame. Hear the chilling shriek, “My God, my God, why hast Thou forsaken me?” (Matthew 27:46). If you are not humbled in the presence of Jesus, you do not know Him. You were so lost that nothing could save you but the sacrifice of God’s only begotten Son. As Jesus stooped for you, bow in humility at His feet. A realization of Christ’s amazing love has a greater tendency to humble us than even a consciousness of our own guilt. Pride cannot live beneath the cross. Let us sit there and learn our lesson. Then let us rise and carry it into practice.
C.H. Spurgeon

One of the lessons I’ve learned and re-learned in more than one church is the danger of selecting a man to serve as elder who has a history of protracted, repeated, and/or unresolved conflict. On more than one occasion I have overlooked conflict in a man’s life, reasoning either that it was justified by the circumstances, a function of immaturity that has been outgrown, or foisted upon him as the innocent party. The fact is, however, that even when circumstances or theology vindicate his side of the conflict, a man can still be a quarrelsome man. This may demonstrate itself in a lack of gentleness, a propensity to taking rigid positions when none are required, an inability to lose graciously, or simply an over-love of debate. Whatever the form it takes, quarrelsomeness is a serious impediment to effective service as an elder; unchecked it is a clear disqualification (1 Tim. 3:3).

2 ts Balsamic vinegar
1 ts Dijon Style Mustard
1/2 ts Chopped fresh tarragon
1/4 ts Thyme
1/4 ts Hickory salt
1/8 ts Fresh ground pepper
1/3 c Olive oil; plus
2 tb Olive oil
3/4 lb Tender steak
3 oz Roquefort cheese
2 oz Cream cheese
2 ts Fresh lemon juice
2 Kaiser hard rolls split
6 oz Snow peas trimmed
4 tb Butter
1 md Onion thinly sliced

INSTRUCTIONS

This is a great recipe which is even better with the steak and onions
cooked on the grill or smoked(depends on how hungry and impatient you are
at the time!). This recipe made it to the state finals in Colorado several
years ago.
In a bowl, soak the snow peas in cold water. In a small bowl whisk together
the vinegar, mustard, thyme, tarragon, salt and pepper. Gradually whisk in
1/3 cup oil till well blended. Place the steak in a bowl and pour all but 2
tbsp marinade over meat. Cover, turning once, refrigerate overnight. In a
blender, puree the Roquefort, cream cheese and lemon juice until smooth.
Season with pepper to taste. In a large skillet, heat 1 tbsp olive oil over
high heat. Add drained and dried snow peas and sauté till bright green but
still crisp, about 1 minute. Remove and set aside, keep warm. Add remaining
1 tbsp olive oil to skillet and reduce heat to moderate high. Add steak,
sauté turning once, until medium rare, 3-6 minutes per side. Slice steak
crosswise into thin strips. In a medium bowl toss the steak and snow peas
with remaining 2 tbsp marinade. Butter and toast the buns lightly. Spread
with Roquefort mix on both sides, fill with snow peas and steak. Sauté
onion in 2 tbsp butter till brown and mound on top. Probably makes 1 snack
for belly!
