CHECKPOINT -A- INTRODUCTION TO THE SELECTIONS FROM MARK’S GOSPEL
- JESUS CHRIST, SON OF GOD *
(Readings 5 to 11) We have already read four selections about the incarnation (the coming in human form) of Christ, the Son of God. Now we move to the opening chapters of the shortest and probably earliest Gospel. Mark’s account of the life of Jesus is a portrait of a man of ACTION. There is much less emphasis on Jesus’ teaching than in say, Matthew’s Gospel. Mark also introduces us in his first verse to the Christ, the Son of God. He backs up this title with stories of many supernatural acts by Jesus. However, this feature does not overshadow the equally strong emphasis on, Jesus’ humanity. He is called ‘the Son of Man’ quite often in this Gospel. It is generally agreed that John Mark’s material came from his friend Peter. Other references to Mark can be found in Colossians 4:10, Acts 12:12 and 13:5, 1 Peter 5:13 and probably Mark 14:51- 62. ==========
