Introduction to the selections from the books of Exodus and Acts.

  • The Lord delivers his people *

(Readings 56 to 63)

  • The birth of the Christian Church *

(Readings 64 to 70)

God is a rescuing God! We have seen this already in FOOTHOLD. There are three climaxes of God’s rescuing activity: The Exodus from Egypt, the return from exile in Babylon and the death and resurrection of Jesus.

In this next section we read of the exodus and then see the exciting fruits of the greatest rescue bid of all time – the death of Jesus.

EXODUS

Moses is the hero; he is called by God, challenges the Pharaoh and leads his people out of slavery. Other parts of the Bible describe this event as God’s honeymoon with his bride-people. The Ten Commandments called Israel into a unique loyal relationship.

ACTS

This is Luke’s Gospel part two! It tells of the birth of the Christian Church – the beginnings of the dynamic missionary thrust, the activity of the Holy Spirit in the lives of Jesus’ followers. In fact the book should probably be renamed ‘The Acts of the Holy Spirit’.
