CHECKPOINT B

INTRODUCTION TO THE SELECTIONS FROM THE BOOK OF GENESIS.

  • IN THE BEGINNING (Readings 12 to 18)
  • ABRAHAM (Readings 19 to 23)

The name ‘Genesis’ means ‘beginning’. The book recounts the stories of creation, the fall of humanity and the early history of the world (chapters 1 to 11). Then it moves on to the beginnings of the nation of Israel accented by episodes from the lives of the patriachs Abraham (chapters 12 to 25), Isaac and Jacob (chapters 26 to 36) and Jacob’s sons, especially Joseph (chapters 37 to 50).

In this overture to the Bible’s message, we find important truths about God himself and clues to the nature of people and society.

The kernel of the book lies in God’s promise to Abraham (chapter 12) offering descendants, a land and a relationship with himself.

Genesis shows us God’s good creation, the beginnings of sin and suffering and God’s promise of hope.
