Introduction to the selections from Isaiah and Luke’s Gospel

  • Messages of promise and hope (Readings 42 to 47)
  • Jesus the Saviour of the world (Readings 48 to 55)

These two selections have as their theme SALVATION.

In ISAIAH, the Lord’s messenger brings comfort to God’s people. Here we see a God who is ready to save at all costs. Isaiah’s message was for the people of Judah who were exiles in Babylon. Don’t give up, he says, God will come to you.

In this section we are introduced to the SERVANT. If we read these passages through O.T. lenses we would see this ‘servant’ figure as a picture of the faithful descendants of Abraham. But through N.T. lenses we see a striking and compelling picture of Jesus.

In LUKE’S GOSPEL we see salvation being won for all people through the death and resurrection of Jesus. Luke sees his passion story as the most important theme of his book. He shows that this salvation is offered to all types of people and not just for a select group.
