On the Cloudburst forum, I've posted how the
previous poem, "My Heart," came about. Thanks
for all the kind comments!

Thought this isn't the fourth Thursday of the
month, it is the fourth Saturday, so here's a
"Juvenilus" work, just for the kids.

BIRDS OF A FEATHER
by J. Randal Matheny

I cannot understand a late-night owl,
for I'm the early bird, to get a worm.
I doubt the midnight hooter is truly fowl,
perhaps those nightly haunts are an avian germ.

No decent bird would wake the peaceful night,
that God created for rest and gentle sleep.
At dawn's first light I take my breakfast flight
and greet the sun with a chirp, a trill, and a peep.

I fly to a lower branch and peck the bark;
I wake and startle the owl, who cries, "Hoo! Who?"
"It's me, you sleepy-head, the meadowlark!
The sun is shining bright! I'm awake -- are you?"
