Stitch
by J. Randal Matheny

Ten dull deadbeats lay on their sheets,
When Joe resolved to repent.
He left his perch and went to church;
The nine saw where he went.

Next Sunday morn, the nine, in scorn,
Locked Joe up in the bath.
Then Sunday night, they stalled his flight
And blocked his righteous path.

He tried to flee before they'd see,
But one would always note;
They'd needle and nag, their feet would drag,
They'd hide his Sunday coat.

Whatever Joe tried, the nine would chide --
He always arrived too late;
The nine connived, and Joe arrived
At the closing of the gate.

Then one dark night, ere Sunday light,
With nine dull men at dream,
With a needle Joe rose and sewed their clothes
To the mattress, seam by seam.

Repentant Joe was able to go
To church -- and how sublime!
When Joe was moved, the saying was proved:
A stitch in nine saves time.
