by J. Randal Matheny © 2013March! March! We're marching down the clock —
The sweeping second hand — the hour has struck —
The face of time is painted like a clown —
His laughing, mocking minutes running down —
His tickling tock — a-racing through the cloud
The screaming jet of life — leering, loud —
But deaf are we — and blind — in tatters clad —
All seasoned paupers — from spring to winter bled
Of joy — the body tired of work and clean
Of health — the old retired — the Reaper seen
And yet denied — March! Let eyelids close —
Let cease the running clock before my nose.— ‹‹«»›› —
