THE PUBLIC LIBRARY
by J. Randal Matheny

My silent place of copious thought,
A thousand friends in ordered rows,
I find the elusive facts I sought
In stately tomes of cool repose.

I wander among the shadowed stacks
To meet companions for my trek;
Among them, learned doctors, quacks,
loud troubadours, old-school, high-tech.

Not even screens for Internet
Can dim what printed pages hold;
I cannot soon repay my debt,
I owe this house a hundred-fold.

To borrow books, to read in peace,
Old Ben's idea was meant for me,
To fly and find the mind's release,
A place to see the world for free.

I sent the poem "My Mother" to my list, "UPLift,
Your Day to Shine" this morning. If you're not a

Traveling in the USA is not always conducive to
writing, but today was an exception. When we
return home to Brazil May 18, perhaps we get
back to our regular schedule.

Go to the site forum to find out what called this
poem forth, and in which public library I wrote it.

Meanwhile, kiss your mom, give her a call, or at
least, remember her with fondness.
