TOO MUCH OF MAN
by J. Randal Matheny

"There is too much of man here."
--Lord Byron, "Lake Leman"

Among the ruins too much of man remains,
Too little of God in churches' growth and gains.
The single eye broke into a thousand shards,
While shepherds fed the wolves their trusting wards.
The forceful word proclaimed was turned aside,
Gave place to vague example as a guide.
No more a message called the soul to repent,
For preachers lost the mission for which they were sent.
Theologians layered the Word with subtle tones,
As praises erupted from the muted stones,
And sermons of faith poured forth from babes and fools.
When prophets curse, God uses the mouth of mules.
>From shambles and ash the Lord will raise his reign,
And break the human kingdoms built in vain.
