WARS AND RUMORS
by J. Randal Matheny
randal.us/wars-and-rumors

Among the nations, wars and rumors,
Falling planes would douse our humors,
So we build a snug cocoon;

If we knew the fullest terrors,
All man's horrors, all his errors,
Off we'd fly to hide on the moon.

There, too, would evil darkness follow,
Utop's ideals soon age and yellow,
No place from harsh injustice immune;

Both godless son and pious mother
Sow tares of paltry faith, together,
The field of war with fables strewn.

A rock remains to which the weary
Flee, when surface mists grow dreary,
With God and Body of Christ commune.

Hidden under war's detritus,
All the while the rock's beside us,
Men thought it but a sandy dune.

Here strength and truth go out, and flowing,
Bind souls to heaven, while stars are slowing,
And blind and angry mobs impugn.
