by J. Randal MathenyWhat's a poem for? you ask.
For mirth and myth, for memory's call,
Revealing hearts, removing a mask,
For kneeling pleas and standing tall;
A play on words, a war in paint,
The cry of sinners and sword of saint.A poem's for meaning, when less is more,
When prose falls flat, and speech turns stale,
When thunder rattles the walls and floor,
And age succumbs and hands grow frail.
A poem's for every mood and bent,
For David's dance, for Job's lament.So what's a poem for? We say,
For every heart's full voice, full lungs
To sing, to rail, to shout, to pray,
To heal and loosen a thousand tongues.
Since verse can speak to Everyman's lot,
We ask: For what's a poem not?----
