YOU CAN LOSE A GAME AND STILL BE PROUD
by J. Randal Matheny

Of all the motives for feeling shame,
Among them is not defeat in a game;
For a team that's done its very best,
Can bear a loss with pride in the chest.

But defeat that comes from a loss of heart,
A fear that stalls the lively start,
That strong and paralyzing dread --
Oh, this is shame to hang the head.

You can lose a game and still be proud
That you fought to reach the top, uncowed;
Stand tall when you give your best to the fight,
You still can pillow your head at night.
